This certainly has quite a number of historical applications; unification of the Mongol tribes, War of the Roses. Frankish succession following the death of Clovis to name just a few. I like this.

Of course, and DBA2 list nearly 70 such possibilities. However, only two similar armies would be required for a civil war theme.
