" DBA has no rules to force attackers to advance, nor any time-limit such as nightfall to encourage them to do so" That is why we always use the wonderful time of day (limited number of turns) display. That also seems a good idea.

Great tactical advice (which I intend to try!) but what does and finally position the Road so that the enemy English have no choice but to face the hill long edges. this mean? Does it imply placing the road perpendicular to, or parallel to the English line (assuming they deploy in a line parallel to their own board edge facing the French)? And why do the English then have no choice but to face the long hill edges?

Ah, thanks martin. So by placing a road perpendicular to the hill ridgelines, the invader has to face them. Nice.

I was about to suggest the French could perhaps replace some Kn with allied foot (Scots or perhaps Castilian, thought I). But then I was somewhat surprised to find that list IV/64 can field no allies, despite France having many allies throughout the 100YW. So that's no help at all

I have managed to pull off a couple of wins with the French.
They have occurred when I have charged my knights into the bows very quickly and then had favourable pip and combat rolls.
Problem is the bows get support from the blades so you have to be lucky with the die rolls.

If when you say 'support' you are talking about 'side support' as per the term defined in the rules, remember that bows only get this against enemy foot. That might change the equation somewhat if you are using Kn against them.
Regardless, it's definitely not super-happy-fun-time for the French.

I ran into that problem with late HYW when I advanced dismounted knights into contact, the bows may occasionally slow the advance of the blades but not stop it. With mounted I tried knights charging the blades but the bows were causing problems before they could get to grips.
