I'm looking for good writing on the post Roman Britain period until the 8th century or so. Also anything on post Roman Gaul/early to middle Franks (before Carolingians). Saw a book called As Told in the Great Hall a Wargamers Guide to Dark Age Britain, which I may order on Amazon.

Saw a book called As Told in the Great Hall a Wargamers Guide to Dark Age Britain, which I may order on Amazon. I recommend the Dark Ages AD 476-918 by Sir C.W.C Oman. This covers the other kingdoms of Western Europe as well. Many of his books can be found online as part of the Gutenberg collection.

Ferdinand Victor Henri Lot, a French historian and medievalist.
His masterpiece is The End of the Ancient World and the Beginnings of the Middle Ages.
Been a good while since I read it - in college - but comprehensive. A lot of later historical work is 'historians arguing with Dr. Lot.'

Saw a book called As Told in the Great Hall a Wargamers Guide to Dark Age Britain, which I may order on Amazon. Well worth getting. It covers a broad period as well as weapons, troop types and fortifications. Some detailed info on a number of battles over the period, not sure how accurate they may be though.

I found it made quite a few debatable statements...left me doubting where a lot of the info may have come from, overall. I wouldn’t recommend, tbh.

If you are going to be reading a few, you could include "The Age of Arthur" by John Morris. I understand that some of it isn't well received by many or most historians, so I would be cautious about suggesting it if that is all that you are going to read. Nevertheless, there is a lot of good stuff in it which will help you understand the period between 350 and 650 AD.
