I have the urge to get a Parthian army but am wondering about the manufacturer to go for.
Looking at what’s in offer I rate Xyston as the best manufacturer but am worried that 4 cataphracts will fit on a 40mm base. Has anyone got any experience using Xyston cataphracts?
If I can’t use Xyston then Forged in Battle look good. Again has anyone got experience using FiB on 40mm bases.
I have looked at Essex and know they fit......but they are Essex....excellent in 100 different ways but slightly uninspiring. My Palmyran Cataphracts are Essex and no objections but I’m looking for something more. I’ll use these as a backstop if I can’t find better.
I’m in the UK so Kurhsan are a bit expensive to import.
Peter Pig look OK - I’ve seen Arnaud’s and they look nice but slightly regimented.
So my questions are what have I missed? ...and can I buy Xyston with any confidence?

I have the FiB Parthian cataphracts and found they fitted onto a 40x30 base fairly easily; certainly a lot more easily than the Essex cataphracts, which I also have.
Can't comment on the Xyston ones, I'm afraid.

...Peter Pig could be a good option, or you can try irregular miniatures...

Go with FiB - you won’t regret it 😉

I have a 20mm Parthian army in plastic. The entire DBA army with options by HaT. Two boxes of figures. Parthian Heavy Cavalry (cataphracts) and Parthian Light Cavalry (Horse Archers) the light cavalry box also contained the foot units option. They go well with my 20mm Early Imperial Roman army from Irregular Miniatures.

I have just remembered that I wrote a review of the Irregular Miniatures Parthians for the SoA's magazine Slingshot a while back. I can send you a copy if you would like to see it.
I also have some Donnington Parthian cataphracts mounted singly for another set of rules, which is another option you might want to consider.

I currently don’t have armies by either so I’ll take a look.

FIB are a good choice. They will definitely fit 4 to a stand. I have Old Glory for most of mine and they fit 4 per base. However, FIB come in packs of 12 mounted and do not have a separate general pack. In DBA, for the cataphracts you would get 3 stands of 4 and then 3 command figures. I don't play DBA so I do not know how many stands of cataphracts you need. There are no command in the horse archer pack.

The FiB mounted packs normally include an extra figure - usually a standard bearer of some kind. Use the standard bearer on the General's element and you'll be fine.

Lots of love for FiB - which I get given my Sarmatians are FiB. However, one thing that worries me about FiB Parthians is the wastage with the infantry packs.
No one giving any love for Xyston Parthians - is this because they don’t fit on 40mm bases?
Paddy
P.S. I looked at Irregular and...well ...Nah! Donnington better but very old sculpts that don’t appeal to me. So both don’t flick my switch! Sorry!

Can't comment on the Xyston figures as I haven't seen their Parthians. I have - and like - their Thebans and Thessalians and have a Thracian army pack in the lead-pile.
You could mix FiB mounted and Essex infantry if you wanted to avoid having too many spare figures (although you then have to pay for two lots of postage).

Problem with Xyston is that they’re really beefy 18mm figures. Lovely castings, but don’t mix with others well (Museum are also in the same vein)...
