Hi guys
I have had an idea which I hope is worthy of sharing.
At the moment we are not allowed social gatherings of more than six people. This rules out the usual sort of competition where perhaps 15 or so players compete. However 6 people is a very good number for a small tournament where every player can play all of the other entrants (possibly with a sixth game - 1st v 2nd, 3rd v 4th etc)
How about a competition where we form local groups of six. The local competition produces a winner. He goes through to a National Finals day to face five other local winners and they all slug it out to see who wins the Covid Cup.
The Government guidelines have been followed regarding numbers and it would be easy to ensure social distancing while the games go on (I won't go into details here but it is very easy to do). The downside is that the cost of a venue would be split between only six people. With very few competitions going on I am sure we are all saving money so this might not be such a problem.
Someone would need to agree to organise the whole thing, formulate the rules and oversee everything. He would need to know numbers in advance so that the number of local groups could be decided and the mechanics of progression to the final could be worked out. Also local organisers would have to be recruited to sort out venues and notify results etc. Also one of the finalists would need to organise a fairly central venue so that all finalists have a chance to get to play.
Something like this could at least give those of us who like to play the odd competition game something to get excited about over the next few months.
What do we think?

I have to confess I am on the cusp of cancelling the Tarrington Tourney.
If there are enough interested parties in gonatas' idea, I would consider using the date and venue to run a local leg...

Not much response. Ah well. It my be that the Covid Cup (tm) is an idea ahead of its time, or well beyond its time or perhaps even outside time altogether. I guess we all have a bit more than Tournaments on our minds at the moment. I will be sorry, Diades, if you have to cancel Tarrington this year. Perhaps there might be a handful of players out there interested in a six hander - which might make it possible to run something?

Lovely idea, but still a great deal of uncertainty in my mind as to whether I’d feel it worth the risk. Plenty of wargamers have vulnerable relatives, too, I guess, so that may affect take up.

I watched a comedy show the other night where, in passing, two of the 'youngish' people were saying how they had had Covid and it was pretty rough for 2/3 weeks but they were ok now, apart from the fact that neither of them felt they could breath fully because they hadn't recovered their full lung capacity!!
Being one of the older generation my feeling is, despite the real desire to get back to playing DBA, I really don't want to gamble unnecessarily with my long term health, or others I come into close proximity to, particularly as the infection numbers are rising again, so I'm still waiting to see how things develop.

I hope you’re patient, Mark, as I feel you could be waiting a long time... P

Well if you organisers keep cancelling tournaments to keep us 'oldies' safe Paul, it does mean I get to keep the Northern Cup a bit longer!
Of course one down side is cgothicus also gets to keep the DBA League Title for longer. (Which will no doubt please his friend no end!)

I had an optimistic email from the Hammerhead organisers last week about next March. However, it is difficult to see the situation improving much by the time they need to make a final call on it (probably Jan time, I would think). One lives in hope 😉 P

Hope is around 12-13 miles away (according to Google Maps). An old joke, but one I thought needed an airing... Take care & keep safe. Geoff

As the organizers of the DBA League probably know, Portsmouth held the FA Cup for a record length of time. (I sincerely hope we will be back wargaming sooner than that.)

An overwhelming number of very close friends to the current title holder have informed me that he would be honoured to be associated with legendary FA Cup winning Portsmouth team of 1939 -1945. Ring out you Pompey bells!
We are not sure that the Northern Cup is in such good hands.
Looking forward to the start of the new season in 202?
