The records are reasonably consistent with regard to King Ashurbanipal's military successes over the Elamites, and others for that matter. What is not consistent is how his reign ended. Maybe he attempted to extend his empire further East against the Medes and something went wrong? We decided to find out...
The Median ruler has drawn up his army against the might of Assyria, ha! I the mighty Ashurbanipal, King of the Universe, will see them routed!
A row of Median archers (Ps) are drawn up within the edge of a large wood. To their left my adversary in his chariot (LCh), with a row of spearmen (3Ax) to his left. Arranged to their rear left are two units of cavalry. Another two units of cavalry are to the enemy's right, beyond the woods.
I have arrayed my own cavalry opposite the enemy's right flank, with heavy chariots in column, mine to the rear, alongside them. A unit of levies (7Hd), sit between the chariotry and a large edifice, opposite the wood. Two units of my spearmen (4Ax) are within the edifice. On the far side, a line of my foot guards and long-shield spearmen (all Sp) with archers (4Bw) behind. Beyond the spearmen is a large difficult hill.
The Median general and his spear advance, whilst his rear left flank cavalry race behind towards the front of the wood, crossed by one unit of enemy archers racing to the his extreme left flank, whilst the remaining units move to the wood's edge. His right flank cavalry also advance a little, my cavalry and one unit of chariots advance to intercept, whilst my lighter spear advance through the edifice.
The enemy general wheels right in front of the wood to aid his right flank cavalry, whilst the enemy archers rush into the edifice and a unit of Median spear moves across to join them. I head off to the left flank to make the decisive blow.
The enemy cavalry withdraw and their archers are pushed back out of the edifice to the woods, whilst their supporting spear are destroyed. I hook up with my other chariotry and head right, behind my cavalry who have followed the withdrawing Medes. The enemy general brings cavalry to support him to face off against me and my progress halts due to the threat of the enemy archers in the woods.
Whilst I try to bring my lighter spearmen across to the woods, the Medes take spearmen wide on the opposite flank through the difficult hills to threaten my right. The Medes then instigate a mounted attack on my centre in front of the edifice and destroy my guards and a unit of light spear! Patience. Slowly, slowly...
The cavalry on my left engage their opposites. My remaining light spear engage the enemy archers in the wood and turning them, remove the threat to my chariotry advance. The Median avoids me by charging my centre along with his cavalry and spearmen, whilst his spearmen on the hill engage with my right.
Fighting is fierce, but my archers destroy a unit of cavalry at range and then another up close and finally my light troops destroy the enemy archers in the woods. (4-2). The Median King escapes in defeat, I can advance further into his territory.
Clearly it was not the Medes who did for Ashurbanipal (this time)!
