Hi all, I've searched the forum and come up empty, but apology of this is repeating an earlier thread. I've got the opportunity to introduce the purple bible top some possible new converts. It's a couple of people whom my wife and I board game with on a regular basis, and who I've slowly brought around to the idea of wargaming! But, now I have the opportunity to show off the greatness that is DBA, I'm not sure which armies are the best to do it with! I'm not wanting something that requires an knowledge of the intricate details, and at the same time wanting to avoid the Sp vs Sp snoozefest. Which is why I thought to ask the learned denizens of this forum. Any advice or ideas?? Thanks in advance, Ed P.s. I have just a few minis, so all armies (except for chariots) are open!

So many possibilities, but Rome invading Germanic territory is always fun. The woods and swamp are a minimum needed for terrain yet offering a maximum of headache for Rome.

Gauls vs Romans is a pretty fun intro

You do have to be careful as the wrong match up could make some peeps hate the game, a few people I know have had a bad experience in their first game and it turned them off a system.
Fortunately I am so used to getting thrashed I am immune from such concerns.
EIR vs British/Gauls/Is always a good thematic match up.
Get to defend in bad going and they may do better than attacking across an open table.
Warband vs Blades tends to be pretty quick in one way or another

It would probably help if there were a limited number of troop types on each side (maybe 3 or 4 at most?) and preferably ones without too many special rules. Maybe leave the elephants at home for the first outing. Are you thinking of teaching them one-on-one, or refereeing while they play against each other?

Hi all, Thanks for the thoughts! And Baldie, you hit my fear on the head. I worry the wrong match up will kill any interest in the game! That's why I'm not not sure about Wb vs Bd. It can be pretty brutal and over quickly. I like the idea of Rome vs Carthage, is big on the historical flavour. I was also considering a 100yrs War match up.
It's two friends. So I'm thinking it might be best to referee a game between them. Otherwise the other is just sat watching. Or perhaps make it a two vs me?! I've not had to introduce new players, let alone two at once. Thanks, Ed

HYW battles can be a bit one sided and have lots of shooting. Tony is pretty much spot on with Polybians vs Carthage - it was the Punic wars that got me into DBA, but my one fear is that the Polybian army is easy to play and Carthage is hard - so a good match up if you are playing Carthage against a newbie playing Romans but not if both are new. So for that reason I’d suggest adding a Gallic army to make it the best three armies for beginners. The nice thing about the Gallic army is that they can legitimately fight Romans and Carthaginians plus the very different fighting styles add variety.

I agree with Paddy - everyone loves the Punic Wars, but Carthage is a tricky bunch to handle first up and will work best if the experienced player takes them and the newbie handles the Romans, as they’re much more straightforward- line up and roll forward 😉

I’m going to recommend Crusaders or Normans or armies with Knights. You can show them the quick kill rule with Knights and Knights are fun when they steam roll the other side or when they die gloriously getting carried away in pursuit.
I did a series of HYW battles with 2 English armies, a French army and a Scots common army as Demo/learning games at the Little Wars Comvention. They worked well for 2v1 and 2v2 player combinations too.

Salutations !
Currently on workbench are four armies I'm painting up for friends, who are boardgamers but not minature gamers. Ancient British (have posted pics on TMP), Picts (just have to finish up their broach), EIR (getting started) and Alexander / Successors (about half done).
Will report back when they're finished, delivered and led into action.

The way I introduced my dad was to be the “mechanics master” leaving him to be the general who rolls dice and decides what he wants to do grand scheme.
In that sense I would only have a few element types but I would totally bring the elephants to the Rome vs Carthage game. Colorful shields of hoplites romans, and elephants! Wonderful looking game, even if the elephants are harder to handle.

Any as long as they are not any of the armies I own.
As they always lose!

There is nothing wrong with creating hypothetical armies just to demonstrate the rules. So you could do: 4 Spear, 4 Cav, 2 LH, 1 Aux and 1 Ps V. 3 Knights, 3 Blade, 3 Bow, 2 Pike and 1 Ps.
This will demonstrate most of the rules, has some army diversity and is a fair match up.
Just name the armies after your friends.
The critical issues to start with are: PIPs, Groups, Extra moves, Basic Combat (More Recoil; Double Kill), Shock (Destroyed on More), Evade (Double Destroy becomes Flee), Overlaps, Hard Flanks, Terrain (though for the first game you could drop some of the Light troops and play without Terrain).
Add Elephants, Artillery and War Wagons only after they have the basics down.
