It's a long way to Washukkani, it's a long way to go. It's a long way to Washukkani, to the sweetest girl I know...
We've been marching for ages, sent by King Shaushatar to join the King of Kadesh's alliance against the greedy Pharoah Thutmose III. Apparently we're going to fight at this place called Megiddo, where the world is destined to end, meeting the southerners as they emerge from the Pass of Aruna. Can't say I'm keen, but I'll see it through: don't fancy those Egyptian fellers ravaging our homeland.
Pharaoh deploys his army first, a row of archers, with two units of spear (3Bd) on their left and a unit of spear and javelin skirmishers on their right. Behind lurk the Egyptian chariotry. Our general deploys me and the boys (7Hd) on our right wing next to a marsh on the end of our infantry line, which slopes away from the enemy, so that we are furthest from them. To our left are our archers and then our javelin skirmishers, next to a small wood. Behind my gang some way back are two units of fast spearmen (3Ax) and, behind the archers, half of our chariots including our general, with our camp behind him. Our other chariots are on the far left of the woods.
The Egyptian infantry march forwards and our chariots on the left flank advance and turn in to threaten. The infantry keep coming, with their left flank spear racing ahead towards the marsh and his javelins entering the woods. Our archers retire to their left to use the woods as shelter from superior numbers, whilst our javelins tackle and destroy their counterparts and occupy the woods. Our own spear occupy the space to my unit's left where the archers were. Our general goes to join our left flank.
Pharaoh wheels his chariotry behind his infantry to counter our left advance, wheels his archers towards us and sends Spears into the woods against our javelins. Chariots clash in a massive cloud of dust and whilst two of our units back off, one enemy unit backs off and another is destroyed. Things are going our way...come on boys!
The enemy spear push our javelins and cause them to flee from the woods. The enemy spear on their left flank race behind their advancing archers to support their chariots, more of our reserve chariots go to support our left flank.
Our general over commits and is attacked in the flank by multiple spearmen, backing him against his own line, whilst the Egyptian archers start showering us with arrows.
We see our general break free and rejoin the chariot battle, whilst spear and javelins of our own race through the woods to protect him. My mates and I are out on a limb suffering from all of this archery.
This time the chariots clash, we lose some of our brave boys, and some of our own spearmen are shot, the battle is now in the balance.
Our bows begin counter-fire at the enemy and score success, I hope they hurry up, we are still being peppered and pushed by the enemy archers, until all but one unit push past us? A relief, but why?
Ah, our remaining reserve chariots, who are pushed back to the edge of our camp and destroyed, whilst the Egyptians also see further success in the chariot tussle. Time to flee into the marsh and try to get home to safety!
Chariot era warfare always seems to be random. Everything is potentially vulnerable. Where you think you are strong, you lose, where you think you are in trouble you end up destroying the enemy. Anyhow, an historically accurate Egyptian victory and fun was had by all.
