Prompted By Nangwaya, who informed me about it, I have bought a new boardgame:-
www.amazon.co.uk/Grey-Fox-Games-War-Worlds/dp/B07XVXGMD7/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Grey+Fox+games+war+of+the+worlds&qid=1587762971&sr=8-2
...and here are the miniatures for it (which I had to buy separately):-
www.greyfoxgames.com/games/war-of-the-worlds-the-new-wave-miniatures/
It’s a great quick two player game, lasting less than an hour.
Very simple to play...but the strategy is soooo deep.
And it’s also good for solo play, as the cards (there are no dice) are not secret,
nor can they be played during the opponent's turn.
In “War of the Worlds: The Next Wave” both sides have an asymmetric deck of “Supply Cards”, all
totally different for each side, with totally different abilities, leading to totally different strategies.
New cards, some aiding combat, some aiding movement, and some aiding your resource income,
randomly appear and can be bought and added to your “Supply Deck”.
(if you have the resource cards to pay for them..coins for the humans, energy for the Martians).
Note that unlike the humans, the Martian Tripods and their alien buildings can never be destroyed,
and their Flying Saucer can’t even be targeted or damaged in any way by the Victorian/Edwardian
pre-World War One British Mark I tanks, dreadnoughts and biplanes! (but Barrage Balloons will
restrict the movement of the Saucer).
To play solo I just roll a die to decide which new available card my artificial opponent will buy,
and for movement/combat I roll to see if they will make a reckless but devastating attacks
ignoring any counter-attacks, or if they will make cautious attacks that will do themselves
the least harm, but cause less damage to the enemy.
Although not specifically designed for it, solo play is quite enjoyable (and I’ve lost many times!).
