The Thebans (BkII/5) can have 8Sp and 4Sp. If one of their 8Sp elements is in close combat and they are lined up mutual side with one of their 4Sp, does the 8Sp get +1 from the 4Sp as well a getting +1 from rear support, giving the 8Sp a combat factor of 6 all told?

Yes. The two +1 are entirely separate and unrelated.
Also applies if the two 8Sp are next to each other (in which case, the one that is also the general will be on total CF of 7)
Same double +1 also applies to 8Bw in mutual side edge contact with 4Bd.

Actually, if one loses the 8SP general first (+1 for general and +1 for first double element), losing any other element will lose the game.
