Hello,
I would like to build the opposing armies for Gaugamela. Do I need II/12 and II/7?
II/7 : Later Achaemenid Persian 420 BC - 329 BC II/12: Alexandrian Macedonian 359 BC - 319 BC
Thank you
Additionally, I do not see any archer for the Persians, is this normal?

Those are the armies I’d use.

I use a variant house rule I came across somewhere on this site giving the option to change the 3 x kardakes (4Ax) or takabara (3Ax) or mercenary hoplites (Sp) to 3Bw due to references of a "hailstorm of arrows" in some accounts. Don't know how accurate it is but it does help out LAP
Regards,
j

The II/7 Later Persians have a wide range of element options Tifast (Gilles) . Being an historical player, here for what it’s worth is what I use for the Persians:- Battle of Granicus (334 BC): 1 x 3Kn General, 2 x CV, 2 x LH, 5 x Sp (mercenary hoplites), 2 x Ps. (maximum mercenary hoplites)
Battle of Issus (333 BC): 1 x LCh General (Darius), 2 x Cv, 2 x LH, 3 x Sp (hoplites), 2 x 4/3Ax, 1 x Ps, 1 x 7Hd. (as ‘J’ says, maybe swap the Ax for 3Bw, as some historians say there was an ‘arrow storm’)
Battle of Gaugamela (331 BC): 1 x LCh General (Darius), 2 x Cv, 2 x LH, 1 x SCh, 1 x Sp (hoplites), 3 x 3Ax/3Bw, 1 x Ps, 1 x 7Hd. (notice how the Persians are becoming poorer and poorer in quality after each defeat)I also like to use ‘decorative double-bases’ (see fanaticus.boards.net/post/10670 ) to represent the huge numbers of useless foot the Persians had. Alexander will of course be: 1 x 3Kn (Alex with his Companions), 1 x Cv, 1 x LH, 1 x Hypaspists (see below), 6 x 4Pk, 1 x Sp, 1 x Ps. ( I like to treat the Hypaspists as if they were 3Bd...see fanaticus.boards.net/thread/520/alexander-hypaspists-blades )
If you’re interested, an account of the above can be seen in a campaign setting in the appendix at the back of this:- vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/fanaticus-dba/images/4/41/TIME_OF_DAY_DISPLAY.pdf/revision/latest?cb=20170212182516(Look for “Map-Less Wars, Example #2, Alexander’s Conquest of Persia. I wanted to use Baccus figures (6mm) to build the army at the ratio of 4x6mm for 1 15mm. Unfortunately Baccus packs contains 3 to 4 times the number of figures I need. Maybe I do this in 10mm, as I will build both armies, it should be fine. Edit: will definitely adopt the double base idea for the Persians, it is an excellent idea!

Eventually 10mm turned out quite expensive. Found Rapier figures in 6mm that allowed to pick only what I need for a DBA game. Project's on!

The first edition DBA rules (dated March 1990 - 30 years! ) included A Gaugamela OOB, 52 elements of Persians and 40 of Macedonians. Will scan and zap off copies if anyone interested (probably not till I'm back from Cold Wars.)
