A couple of weekends ago myself and a few friends were having a pint in the village social club, we were talking about hobbies and I explained mine and showed pictures of some of my models sized from 28 mm to 2mm. Comments included "Wow!", "How the ***** hell can you paint anything so small?" "I wouldn't have the patience" and "I know a good therapist if you need counselling!"
One friend Dave was very interested in the pictures of some 20mm longbowmen and we found out he had shot Longbow as a hobby in his youth. He is somewhat ancient now which prompted comments from the others which included "Did you kill any Frenchmen?" "Must have been frightening having all those Frogs charging at you!" and "have you still got your sharpened stake?"
Even more interesting was Rob, he has done a great deal of research into his family history and we found out one of his ancestors Sir William Trussell led a retinue and served under the Duke of York at Agincourt! We asked if his ancestor knew Dave. Plus he collected and painted model soldiers as a boy, mainly Napoleonic, Rob that is not Sir William Trussell.
Then Big Steve confessed he use to play WW2 wargames with his brother in vast tank battles in their garden as a lad.
Chris confessed he once asked a girl called Mary if she wanted to see his little soldier. Apparently that didn't end well.
All were interested in how games actually worked. I quickly explained the mechanics of DBA.
Kenny said "No risk of anyone getting hit if your in charge of shooting a unit of archers, you can't hit anything with a shotgun!"
Now all I have to do is see if they want to try a game. As long as Chris doesn't bring out his little Soldier.
