Paul and Tony
Would you be OK to do a quickie announcement on the day, and ask that all SoA members who play each other have their games submitted into the Society of Ancients Championship, please?
If so, would you be able to collate the results for Denis G. to submit?
I think around half the players are Society members, so it might provide a good haul of games.
(Meself, plus possibly.....Richard Pulley, Martin Myers, Simon Wilson, Denis Grey, Pete D., Baldie, Phil Steele, Stephen Finn, Mark Skelton. Anyone else on the list of players who’s a member of the SoA, maybe they’d highlight here?)

Hi Martin Yes, will do and this year we have a new scoresheet system which should make compilation of this much easier... P.

As ever fantastic day out.
Some great tables, Prussians vs Estonians was a tease and the Aztec vs Spanish I could barely think what to do.
Figs were top notch too.
Sorry I had to fly I was dropping John off for the train.
Thanks to organisers, those who allowed me to fly so high and those who put me back in my place again.
Congrats to winners, I never found out, and everyone else as well.
Will stick on a few pics tomorrow.

Sorry to see not everyone who had booked could attend, but still a great day with some really good, challenging and fun games.
My first game with the Arab Conquest v Pete D's Christian Nubian was an evenly matched 3-3 draw where we both had chances to win, but the dice said No. (Drawn games don't give any victory points, only the elements killed)
As the Estonians in the second game v Baldie with the Prussians, I was fortunate to survive a cavalry attack on my right flank before creating a couple of holes in his line of the other side of the field, one with a hard flanking move and another with some very lucky dice (always helps!) These finally proved crucial,
The third game saw my Ottoman's mainly assaulting a wood held by Colin's 3 Ps and supported by some camp followers of the Order of St John, whilst my LH and Cav attempted, (unsuccessfully) to get around a marsh. After killing off 2 Ps but losing 2 elements myself I decided to go for the win out the other side of the wood, but my Cav and Bw got turned over in one bound by Colin's Bd Gen and a Ps giving him a 4-2 victory in a very tightly fought game.
One win, one draw and one loss was looking distinctly average at lunch.
Fortunately the afternoon proved more productive.
The fourth game, as the Komnenan Byzantine's, I managed to pounce on Phil Steele's Seljuk Turk General on a 4-2 and kill him. I then had a very lucky final round where all the combats seemed to go my way and ended up killing 7 elements in total, which all helped toward the final points score.
The fifth round was a crazy, but great fun game. I had Spanish against Mark S' Aztecs. Having practised this one beforehand with the Aztecs and lost against friend who rarely plays DBA, I was feeling pretty confident. Unfortunately Mark S had a far better plan than me and, by shielding his important troops with his Hd, managed to get into my line with his fast blades. My 3Bw shooting had only managed to repulse a Ps when we realised that they were shooting from a difficult hill and were more than half a base width back, (a basic mistake which neither of us had noticed, though thinking about it I'm still not sure why this rule is there, unless it's a wooded hill). Anyway, whilst I managed to take out one element and Mark's 3 Bd General with my Kn Gen (much biting of nails before the dice scores were revealed), he managed to kill 3 of mine including the Art. 2G-3 next kill winner. I hard flanked another of Mark's blades and killed it. Great! Unfortunately one of my Bw then decided to die at the hands of one of Mark's Ps. So 3G-4 and we get to play another round! Mark gets a Bd v Bw in the open 5-2, but there's also a 3Bd v 3Kn(G). Bd kills Bw, but 3Kn kills 3Bd. Score 4G-5. On we go again. I get enough Pips to get a 3Kn(G) v Bd with an overlap so 4-2 to me. We both throw our dice. I throw a 1. Mark needs 3 to kill my General and take the game, or anything higher to survive. He reveals a 2! So a 5G-5 win to me and more element points to the total.
On the final game (as Middle Imperial Romans) I was out manoeuvred by Stephen F's Picts, but somehow managed to get enough troops across in time to take on his flanking movement. On the last bound I was 3-1 up, thanks to having hard flanked and killed a 2 deep pike block, but I got enough Pips to move a Bd back and charge my Cav General into a Ps. The dice did the job and I just managed to win with the penultimate throw of the dice. However for long periods I thought I was going to suffer the ignominy of being the only player to lose with the Romans against the Picts, so well did Stephen play.
As Colin and Richard had a 3-3 draw in their final game I was surprised to find out I'd come out on top by two points.
Really good fun day with some memorable games.
Now to see if I can find an engraver who will engrave the trophy in as large a font as Richard Pulley did last time! 😉
Thanks again to Paul, Tony and crew for laying this on.
