Well aren’t LH supposed to have a retreat point where they can change ponies, rest, get more Javelins etc, and it was this rest spot that the bw are hitting. Out there the ponies are sitting and not zooming around as they are up close and actually shooting at the enemy. So I thought that was what Mr Barker meant by the danger to LH. The base size of LH includes both the spread out formation of the attacking horses but also their rearward rest area. I think you'll find it was the "...artillery, who made their rally position unsafe", rather than bowmen. (pg3)
You say, "The base size of LH includes both the spread out formation of the attacking horses but also their rearward rest area."
Only if a LH base represents a much deeper ground scale than other troop bases, like some weirdly compacted artillery train just a few paces behind them wherever they go! Horse archers' rearward rest areas were safely beyond 150+ yards from the enemy.

CV recoil rather than flee due to greater protection and determination which is a consequence of their being melee troops as well as missile.
The corollary is that they die when doubled where LH flee (except against PK, SP, or HD) due to the fact that they are in actual melee and can't break away as readily as LH.

Cv armour and determination, melee+missile vs LH just missile.
So the inherent nature of the LH is to flee the moment things aren't succeeding, with the intent to return and try again if possible.
It's something I'll just have to accept. I think some of PB's particular wording threw me with respect to what LH detest.

Oh you are totally right. Will need to perform a more careful reading of the rules...as they say.
