I’m interested Simon, and I should have my “War of the Worlds Martians” ready, (see www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5H4yK_tiGI ) ...or “ THEM!”, the giant radioactive ants from the 1954 film of the same name, (see www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4URRp39XOo ) However, I do have a quick question:- Which movement scale will be used?...100 paces = 1 inch, or 100 paces = 1 Base Width? Base Widths are better, as it makes games quicker, important in time limited tournaments. (making for more pub time during the lunch hour )

(making for more pub time during the lunch hour ) Beware.....BW movement, when tried by Hott leading lights, proved problematic, especially for the big 'flee' moves in Hott. Inches 'works' better, apparently, though we're more used to BW these days. I think only the first three games go into the GBnU International tournament pot, usually, so number of games/speed is less of an issue than with DBA tournaments. Have fun, all......

Those are good points Martin...but HoTT can drag on somewhat when trying to get replacement returning Hordes back into the front line (a large Stronghold helps, as they will be a bit nearer to the enemy, but this only works if you’re the defender).

The theme is the one being used at other legs - Old School.
To quote from Terry:
"
Old School - A chance to build an army with the figures you loved as a teenager!
Dig out and dust of those long forgotten Minifigs painted Gloss!
Give 20mm plastics some love!
Or build an army from your favourite teenage Scifi or fantasy series!
Or even just build an army from the original rules!
Or, some are interpreting it – “back to basics” i.e. orcs and wizards and men and hobbits, etc. a la Tolkien as an example (but not restricted to Tolkien)."
So quite flexible to various interpretations! And of course, you don't have to bring a themed army - it only needs to be themed if you want to be entered for the competition.

Re BW v inches, I am inclined to stick with inches. Apart from the reasons Martin mentioned. I am also conscious that we have HoTT players coming who are well used to inches and I wouldn't want to throw this change at then at this point. If I remember coirrectly, we got through quite a few games last year without too many draws or other problems. Also, I am confident that the dash and elan of Bakewell players will mean that we will see soaring eagles, dashing swordsmen and charging heroes rather than ever so slowly shuffling mindless hordes!!! Cheers Simon

“Oooo, please sir, please Simon Sir, I have a question sir...” ☝ I would like my ‘Martian Tripods’ to be Blades, but they are soooo large because of their tripod stance and their third rear leg that I can only fit them on 40mm deep bases. Now then...what happens when they recoil? Would my opponent want them recoiling their base depth, or just 15mm like true Blades? (Either way they’ll be destroyed if forced to recoil when hard flanking due to lack of room)I’ll let you decide, as we all want to “do what Simon says” don’t we.

(Either way they’ll be destroyed if forced to recoil when hard flanking due to lack of room)I’ll let you decide, as we all want to “do what Simon says” don’t we. I generally apply the rule that base depth as measured on the table is base depth recoiled - so a Blade on 20mm base will recoil 20mm and not 15mm. Base depths greater than 40mm are not a problem as you don't recoil more than your base width. BUT in this instance, I think I have too options: - Snip off the rear leg of the tripod and then use an angle grinder to reduce the base depth to 15mm or
- Have the tripod recoil 20mm with the usual consequences if is not able to recoil its full distance, perhaps representing the tripod crew being overcome by the earth's atmosphere and tripping over its third leg.
Come to think of it, my angle grinder is in storage due to house moving so we may have to go with Option 2. But is my felling axe around?

Er...think I’ll play “Simon says” and go with option (2)...and I full expect them, like all elements on bases over 20mm deep, to die if they have to recoil and have no room. I blame it on all those nasty Earthly bacteria. As for Martians “tripping over their third leg”...yeah, the same thing often happens to me. (I am of course referring to my lack of skill when dancing... )

Thanks to the those attending today. We had 14 players playing 6 rounds.
Pete Duckworth came first, followed by Mark Johnson and Tony Green. There were some very good looking armies and strongholds that made choosing a single winner difficult. In the end, Pete Duckworth won best army with his 1980s rioters and protesters and Neil Mason won best stronghold with his ghostly Confederate steam train. More details and pictures to follow.

Fab day as ever Simon Cheers for a great time everyone, really enjoyed HoTT. Def try to drum up some trade at Janco's The basic standing theme is to have fun and share a common event with others around the world. This year’s tournament theme is: Theme was Old School A chance to build an army with the figures you loved as a teenager! Dig out and dust of those long forgotten Minifigs painted Gloss! Give 20mm plastics some love! Or build an army from your favourite teenage Sci fi or fantasy series! Or even just build an army from the original rules! Or, players should feel free to interpret "Old School" however they choose. Last time I used rocks from a walk as my army, considering they were really nicely based and used some glue and flock to do them it was quite an expensive army. This time I needed to make some savings. In my defence one of my first forays into some kind of wargaming was when I used to stay with my Grandma and Nannan and used to draw tanks, soldiers and planes and have battles with them. As such I give you my latest HoTT army, titled "Badly Drawn Baldie" Decided to draw on the bases and made a stronghold the same way Then decided to make the terrain match Cliffs, Woods and Hills First game I played against a Skaven army, totally messed up the picture so no image of these I am afraid Than I played against a force called "The High Crusade" based on a book and film. Will def be buying the book, Crusaders in Space. Next up was "Uncivil in the 80's", Arthur Scargil with poll tax rioters and miners. Then a Buster Keaton Army again based on a film, this time a B&W one so it was all painted in B&W as well Onto a "Chinese" army Finally onto "Elves" with three wizards Stevie brought "Ants" Unfortunately I did not get pics of the rest of the forces. Really good day and HoTT has so many possibilities for historical and Fantasy/Sci Fi I will def do more

Actually Baldie, the “Ants” were supposed to be “Them!” from the 1954 film. (See www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4URRp39XOo ) My army consisted of:- 2 x Giant Controller Ants, with powerful telepathic mind control abilities (Magicians), 7 x Giant Soldier Ants (Beasts), 1 x Giant Flying Ant (Flyer), with a nuclear crater/hole-in-the-ground as a Stronghold. (By the way, if anyone is interested in a cheap ready painted ant army, have a look here:-www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=plastic+ants&crid=NXAHFHB6XAW5&sprefix=plastic+Ants%2Caps%2C305&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_12I used the cocktail stick variety, with the the following as worker ants in the Stronghold:-www.amazon.co.uk/Evinis-Plastic-Realistic-Halloween-Supplies/dp/B07CH2P8DD/ref=sr_1_4crid=NXAHFHB6XAW5&keywords=plastic+ants&qid=1573987504&sprefix=plastic+Ants%2Caps%2C305&sr=8-4 ) As for their performance...well...let’s just say it varied. I was late, so missed the first game (doh!), was winning the next game (4 AP lost to my opponent’s 8 AP) when we ran out of time, then I lost the next two games due to my usual phenomenal bad luck (in one game losing some 5 Soldier Ants in a single bound!). After rolling four ‘1’s’ in a row I chucked my wooden rounded dice in the bin and started using a sharp-edged black dice, and ended up winning the last two battles. All-in-all, a great day out with a great bunch of people...and we all got a prize, as Simon gave all the participants a “Wizards Tower” kit each, which was nice.
