We also had a trial day yesterday at PAWS, 4 of us trying various armies (later Crusader, Ayyubid, Comnemnan Byzantine and Order of St John). The only thing we learned was that with such a variety of armies, who gets to place the terrain has an enormous influence.
But this morning, I realised the allies I was using are out of period, so everything I learned about the army I was planning to use is invalid.

(The notes just say it was first used in a field battle on that date, but who's to say some sort of artillery wasn't theoretically available earlier.)

What’s the turnout from the PAWS crew predicted to be, Bill?

One week to go, who's coming? No Colin- game length has put him off. That's disappointing. We'll have to have a thought about game length versus number of games before the first PAWS of next year.

I am disappointed not to be coming to this event. I have been a regular for many years and continue to enjoy this brilliant game, however, I have not enjoyed some PAWS events over recent years because of the rush to fit it all in to 40 minutes. As players gain experience, they learn to overcome setbacks and continue fighting knowing that the game can easily turn. With only 40 minutes drawn games are now not surprising results.
For me, 40 minutes often prevents the kind of manoeuvre game that I enjoy; it doesn’t give me time to await my opporchancity; it means I have to choose a hard charging army from the list provided rather than one I’d like to play with; it forces me to limit terrain choice in order to avoid slow moving deployments and stubborn defences which will eat up time and I even have to avoid talking with my opponent for fear of wasting precious seconds! It’s just not fun!

No Colin- game length has put him off. That's disappointing. We'll have to have a thought about game length versus number of games before the first PAWS of next year. Good idea - it takes a LOT to p*** Colin off, but he’s seriously miffed about this. Personally, I feel adherence to start time is the key. If I was late, I’d expect to miss out /miss a round.....awaiting waifs and strays is commendable BUT penalises all those who make the effort to be there on time - basically, why should thirteen players lose out/ have their games shortened because the fourteenth leaves home 45 minutes after he should. This is the electronic/internet age. We can get incredibly accurate predictions of traffic conditions for the VAST majority of cases. Regular offenders fly in the face of this....and keep getting rewarded for it, at the expense of others. That rant pretty much guarantees I’ll be stuck in traffic on Saturday 😶 ps Crossposted with Colin, it seems.
