Over the years I've specifically purchased armies that have the most historical interest to me. I also tried, generally, to purchase figures that allow me to have armies with a good ability to morph into others. So my collection of rugged barbarians take the field as: Early Vandal, Early Visigoth,Burgundian, Early Frankish (#72: Rugian et al), Old Saxon (#73: Bavarian, Thuringian, etc). Opposing them is the more well-dressed but morphable: Late Imperial Roman, Patricians & Sub Roman British. As you see these two armies, depending upon which figures you add or subtract, end up being 16 armies. After Aetius' Patricians I supposed the Picts are my next favorite.

Not so easy Macbeth. While I congratulate you on a brilliant century - if your house were burning down and you could only save 5 - which ones would they be?
Truth be told, about 17 years ago when Canberra was threatened by serious bushfires and we were packing the car in case we had to evacuate I looked at the vast amount of lead and the huge number of books and decided that since I couldn't save them all and with all the rest of the activity couldn't spare the time to make a considered evaluation. I grabbed three books I hadn't read from the nearest bookcase in case I would be spending several nights in emergency accommodation and compartmentalised the problem. No doubt I would wept tears of blood if disaster did strike - but I was surprised about how coolly I made the decision at the time.
But should the situation arise where I could Southern Sung Chinese - my new Khurusan set Christian Nubian - another fave that has won me much silverware over the time Papal Italian - I will never get anyone to convert that litter again so I need to preserve it Konstantinian Byzantine - they were surprisingly powerful and I want to keep them Early Libyan - the b list AND I get to take their Sea People Allies (1xHCh, 2x3Bd) because you just have to love this army.
Cheers
Well - Not funny anymore
On Tuesday with the Ororral Valley fire only 17km from my house and Emergency Level alert called the elder of the (not so) little warbands and myself were assembling the goods to take and run. (Wf(X) and the younger (not so) little warband were in Sydney). I was in the midst of repacking my Cancon armies and when I put the Siamese away I couldn't stop myself from getting the Sung out, and they are sitting on the table until the fire danger has passed.
At midnight on Tuesday the alert level dropped to watch and act, and now it is down to Advice -
BUT - the forecasts for the next few days are very hot and dry. We are not safe yet.
Cheers folks

Good luck. Hard for those of us in the damp, temperate zones to even imagine. Martin

It must focus the mind when a bush fire is that close....but you weren’t supposed to live-play the idea. Wish we could give you guys some of our rain! As gregorius says - stay safe - at least as safe as the Sung will be!
A recent painting spurt focusing on Successor and Hellenic army lists (where about 75 elements can generate any 2 from about 35 armies) has just pushed me over the 100 army list mark (counting a and b lists as separate - not sure that is how everyone else counts?). So I’m beginning to feel your pain at selecting only 5.
My medieval Germans look like a good option to save now they are at full, all options Purple book standard plus I now need to sneak Vedic and pre-Vedics in with my Clasdical Indians to give me some book 1 options.

Thanks to all for the kind thoughts So far all is well - the fire hasn't come any closer, but the next couple of days will be "Challenging" with high temps and very dry conditions. On the plus side, the mean wind speeds are much lower than in 2003 - the last time I had to take this sort of thing into consideration After Sunday a cold front should ease conditions. Til then folks Cheers

The title of the thread says it all. If you could only own 5 DBA armies for all future use, competitions and games - which ones would you choose? My choice (noting that this will change tomorrow): Classical Indians Parthians LPIA HYW English Polybian Romans Why five? For Desert Island Discs it is eight. One from each period book and one of your 'favourite'? With eight you could have two matched armies from each book.

As long as it’s knight heavy it’s all good.

Because I have 5 digits on my hand? No reason at all apart from sparking discussion. More than happy with a top 8 if that’s the way you want to do it.

I don't want to be negative here but how about 5 armies you wouldn't take? 😁

Haardrada - that doesn’t work. First because I like all my armies - otherwise I wouldn’t have collected them. Second is that there is no such thing as a bad army only a bad matchup. Under the current rules I’d never take a LH army to an Open BUT play them in a matched pair and wimp wars game and they are far more fun than any competition game. Finally, winning with the worst army is just the best feeling ever and nullifies all previous defeats!

I thought you might get players saying they wouldn't take an army because.. which would possibly get someone who actually likes the army and would take it, either because they like it and/or had success with it.
Or maybe the numbers of a particular type of element are awkward, say an odd number of Pk or Warband?

I had the Sung (along with a couple of books and a bag of clothes) spent Sunday night packed in the car, with numerous other important things kept near the points of exit.
A spot fire did flare up somewhere close but was pounced on by the strike forces and was out before we could even see it.
The state of emergency is now over - the fire continues to rage, but is hopefully contained and the weather conditions are set to improve.
Again, my thanks to the Fanatici for their messages of support.
Cheers
