Solid bows add +1 if flank supported by solid blades. On page 11 of my copy, the original hardcover 3.0 book, solid bows already receive flank support by solid blades. Check it over carefully - it applies to solid 4Bw. 8Bw would become a CF of 5 if this applied to them as well - equal to the Legion! OK, I wasn't considering 8Bw since I don't have any. But I don't see how 8Bw gets to CF 5. They start at CF2, then get +1 fighting vs. foot in the open. Add in +1 for blade support and that is CF4. Is there something else that I'm missing?

Yes...you are missing the +1 for being a double-based element (see page 11 paragraph 1 of the basic rules). So under the current basic rules:- CF 2, +1 for being double-based, +1 for side-support = CF 4 (and Persians have no Blades, so no side-support). And the proposed historical rules:- CF 2, +1 for being double-based, +1 for fighting Hvy Foot = CF 4 (if they also got +1 for side-support they’d be CF 5). So only solid 4Bows get side-support, not 8Bows. To quote from page 7 of the “Lessons from History”:- “And the reason why 8Bw loses side-support is because they already have close fighters in their front rank, plus giving them a combat factor of 2, with +1 for being doubled-based, +1 for fighting heavy foot, and +1 for having side-support, would give a total CF of 5 (the same as Blades), which is not borne-out by the historical records.”Some Helpful Downloads can be found here: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Reference_sheets_and_epitomes And here is the latest Jan 2019 FAQ: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ_2019_1st_Quarter

Ah, the +1 for fighting heavy foot is from "Lessons of History", not the standard rules. That's where I got confused. I was counting the double-based modifier but not the one from the LoH. Of course, haven't read the LoH. That'll teach me.
Edit: let me amend that: read them quickly a while back and already forgot I did. Nurse, bring me my meds.

Ah...I too am having trouble downloading it onto my computer. It downloads something, but when I try to open it it says:- “Photos - Lessons_from_History.jpg It appears we don’t support this file format” (I wonder if the Fanaticus Wiki controllers have changed their site protocols?)So let’s take it step-by-step. First: can you go to this site and at least read it?:- vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/fanaticus-dba/images/f/f4/LESSONS_FROM_HISTORY.pdf/revision/latest?cb=20190731193058Second: if so, then I have some good news...I’ve found a work-around. Don’t click on “Download”, instead click on “Print” and “Destination: Save as PDF” to your desktop. That does download something called “x0001_” that can be be opened and printed. Sorry for the inconvenience... ...and I do hope that after all this you find it useful!

Right then Kris...I’ve been doing some research. My mates Nigel and Darren both have the same set-up as myself: laptops running Windows 10. Tested using Google Chrome.....that ‘vignette.wikia.nocookie.net’ link opens and it downloads fine. Tested using Microsoft Edge......that ‘vignette.wikia.nocookie.net’ link opens and it downloads fine. Tested using Internet Explorer...that ‘vignette.wikia.nocookie.net’ link has the option to open or save. Tested using Firefox.................that ‘vignette.wikia.nocookie.net’ link opens and it downloads fine. However, another mate of mine, Ian, is using Firefox on LINUX...and he has the same problems as you. Nonetheless, we were still able to download the correct PDF file (instead of the incorrect JPG file). Here’s how we did it:- Go to the Fanticus Wiki and scroll down till you see the ‘Navigation’ list on the right . Click on ‘Reference_sheets_and_epitomes’ (or use this link:- fanaticus-dba.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Reference_sheets_and_epitomes ) In the new window click on ‘Lessons From History’. On Ian’s LINUX machine this automatically caused it to download the PDF file to his PC’s download folder. He then went to his download folder, found the PDF, and could open, read, and print it as normal. If Google Crome, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, and Firefox don’t work for you, then send me your email address via a private message and I’ll send the damn thing (along with anything else that takes your fancy) directly to you.

In the Lessons From History booklet there is mention of a sister booklet, Event Card Booklet.
Is that available, I can't find any links anywhere?

Ah...I must confess that I still haven’t finished the “Event Card Booklet”. I got distracted by other projects (but I might give it another go later this year). Its purpose is to cover those historical events that actually happened, but DBA doesn’t cover. Some of these events are absolutely essential for re-creating certain historical battles, and these battles can’t be re-fought properly without these particular events. The idea is to use the right appropriate “Event Card” if re-creating a specific historical battle. If fighting a ‘what-if-battle’, then on an aggression roll of ‘3’ you can randomly choose a “Event Card”. And if fighting the best-of-three battles or a mini campaign, each player randomly chooses a card at the beginning, and they can only be used once (any aggression rolls of ‘3’ during the campaign means they can draw another “Event Card”, but can never have more than one of them, so if two are currently in hand one will need to be discarded). They will cover the other historical events, such as scouting and reconnaissance, weather, feigned-flight, impetuous attacks, high or low morale, dissension and confusion, extra troops, anti-mounted ditches, ambushes, wide off-table outflanking marches, and wild mounted chases that were fairly frequent in ancient battles but were left out of the basic DBA 3.0 rules. See fanaticus.boards.net/post/13226/ for a few more details.

Sounds interesting. Lot's of work too, I imagine. I really like the idea of introducing some more historical accuracy than currently exists. The Lessons From History booklet I think will improve my games. I have lots of Ps and Ax!! In the meantime I will research my minimalist DBA armies roster and see how I can think about specific details for the armies/periods. Thanks for the details. Helpful.
