Primuspilus and I have finally completed the “Lessons from History” booklet. This has two main functions:- To provide our best efforts to assist DBA 3.0 in recreating better actual historical battles, and to improve the play balance of certain weak elements in hypothetical what-if battles. And it can be found here: fanaticus-dba.fandom.com/wiki/File:LESSONS_FROM_HISTORY.pdfAny comments and criticisms are of course welcome, but please note that actual playing observations will carry far more weight than mere armchair theorizing...so try them first. Enjoy ------------------------------------
Oh...there is one minor date error in “Lessons”.
In “Section 9: Historical Army List Adjustments”, Hannibal’s Army should read as follows:- (The underlined items show the corrections)
II/32c Hannibal’s Carthaginian Army (218 BC - 202 BC) ...2 x Libyan ‘spearmen’ (Sp or 4Bd veterans after 217 BC), 2 x Spanish scutari or Ligurians (4Ax)... Arable, Aggression: 2. (Polybius says the Libyans used captured Roman equipment, and their behaviour was more like 4Bd than Sp. Giving Hannibal a lower aggression means he gets to choose the battlefield, and if using the “Defender wins at nightfall” rule, it will be up to the Romans to make rash attacks or lose the battle...which sounds realistic)Some Helpful Downloads can be found here: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Reference_sheets_and_epitomes And here is the latest Jan 2019 FAQ: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ_2019_1st_Quarter

Solid bows add +1 if flank supported by solid blades.
On page 11 of my copy, the original hardcover 3.0 book, solid bows already receive flank support by solid blades.

Aawww Joe, I am the better looking of us two! Don't let the horror of gazing upon super Stevie for the first time throw you! Just pan across to the sweet image of my illustrious visage, and all will be well!!!
Seriously, hope you guys find some ideas you like, hopefully not too many you don't like, and please feel free to discard/improve upon/ forget or otherwise suitably manage your experience with it!
We ask only that you bear in mind the following: this was a labour of love, and is coming from a place of confidence and faith in DBA v3 as a design, faith in the community of players, and a desire simply to share with you guys our thoughts on what works.
This is NOT a rival design of DBA, it is NOT intended to denigrate DBA in any way, nor the FAQ team and playtesters, and all who have devoted so much time and energy into making DBA great.
We recognise that DBA, like all tournament rules sets, represents a compromise between what is historical, and what is manageable. DBA r.a.w. is a long rail road, and at some point the design had to stop, and get off at a decent looking station, and get on with life.
We were some of those few in the carriage who wondered what DBA would be like if the train had gone on a few more stops. This is just our interpretation of how the remainder of that journey may have turned out.
Of course, additional layers add complexity (though we have worked very hard to keep that within manageable levels). We recognise that not all layers are equally desirable for all gamers. Nevertheless, we've found these work fairly well so far, and in our (clearly arrogant and vain!) view represent some of the better collections of historical tweaks out there.
We encourage you guys to rip them apart, given a good testing of them. But if you do like them, or some of them even, we'd be thrilled if you guys let us know!
And if you hate 'em, no worries, just know we did our best to get these as good as we felt we could make 'em.

Solid bows add +1 if flank supported by solid blades. On page 11 of my copy, the original hardcover 3.0 book, solid bows already receive flank support by solid blades. Check it over carefully - it applies to solid 4Bw. 8Bw would become a CF of 5 if this applied to them as well - equal to the Legion!

Although Primuspilus has already answered this, I’d like to give an explanation as well. Solid bows add +1 if flank supported by solid blades. On page 11 of my copy, the original hardcover 3.0 book, solid bows already receive flank support by solid blades. Yes, it does. But we are suggesting adding the number ‘ 4’ in front of the word ‘ bows’, so that only 4Bw gain side-support and not 8Bw (items in blue show changes). “The reason why 8Bw loses side-support is because they already have close fighters in their front rank, plus giving them a combat factor of 2, with +1 for being doubled-based, +1 for fighting heavy foot, and +1 for having side-support, would give a total CF of 5 (the same as Blades), which is not borne-out by the historical records.”See “Section 3: Historical solid Bow close combat improvements” for the full details.

You can play whichever way you would like, but I don't think this below is the OFFICIAL ruling.
* Threat Zones only affect troops that are inside them, or have their front-edge touching the TZ far-edge.
If it were I would gladly support it as I do not have an axe to grind either way, but I do not have extra time or energy for the re-indoctrination of my masses if there is a change. Can you confirm either way, Stevie?

Can you confirm either way, Stevie? When we say “inside”, we do of course mean any time you find yourself “inside” a TZ. If you start a bound “inside” a TZ, or if you move into a TZ, you are still “inside” it. As for the rest...there was a big debate about Threat Zones here:- fanaticus.boards.net/thread/1959/hermeneutics-phils-threat-zone(warning!...it's a loooong read!)Until the FAQ Team comes up with something more concrete, each player will have to decide for themselves. I can only give you my interpretation, based on the rules-as-written, which is laid out below:- fanaticus.boards.net/post/21542/fanaticus.boards.net/post/21571/Some Helpful Downloads can be found here: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Reference_sheets_and_epitomes And here is the latest Jan 2019 FAQ: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ_2019_1st_Quarter
