You’ll enjoy the BI troop definitions translated from the original Italian! Knowing Spanish helps a LOT in reading Italian, however the pronunciation is quite different when you try understanding a TV program in Italian.

Later Hungarian 2 x German or Bohemian handgunners (Ps) or war wagons (WWg) or German or Italian pikemen (4Pk) or Bosnian archers (Ps or 3/4Bw). Clearly player can pick 1 of Bosnian Archer and one of either 3Bw or 4Bw, but certainly not 1 3Bw and 1 4Bw Is it possible to pick 2x3Bw or 2x4Bw in this case?

Leaving out the extraneous items 2 x ... Bosnian archers ( 3/4Bw). I do not understand the difficulty in understanding the troop lists. Of all the things Phil has written, this is about the most clear. No boolean logic or calculus needed “or” between 2 codes or prefix numbers directs that any mixture of those elements can be used. “/” between 2 codes or prefix numbers directs that either can be used by all (not some of) those elements.

Thanks, bob. I just wanted to make sure my reasoning were right... now I'm sure.)

Don't bother Tony. I tried BI and found them wanting. BI are just not the rules for me. Cheers, They don't have a PIP mechanic do they? I don't recall Tony. Most of the experience has been scrubbed from my memory . Cheers,

I bought BI and read them a few years ago. Interesting ideas and mechanics but they never got past the “you what?” stage for me so I never actually used them.

I bought a copy of DBA3 specially so I could read what PB had written.
But I see others have taken this up, so having read two pages, reduced in size to a quarter page, by magnifying glass, you will please excuse my not doing it again.
I guess from a quick look that most is OK, even the Late Roman makes sense.

Haven't played Basic Impetus in a while (not bad, but only one simple ancients rule set at a time for our club). It didn't have a PIP mechanic. Instead you roll for initiative, so it is possible to move two bounds in a row.
The Italian unit abbreviations are not intuitive in English. Heavy cavalry = CP, etc.
Also, when your unit is hit you roll for cohesion. No matter how hard you are hit, a roll of 1 on the die shrugs off the hits in most cases. I recall Tom flanking one of my units, getting 3 hits and I rolled a one. I got one hit back on him and he rolled a 6. The weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth was prodigious. The result was stranger than the dreaded 1-6 DBA roll.
