I'm going to be bold and open a thread on quotes from famous personalities that lived in the ancient or medieval period covered by DBA.
I was quietly reading about Phillip II campaigns against the Greeks before the rest of the household got up to cause chaos. I stumbled across Sparta's response to Phillip's threat that he would lay waste to Spartan lands and slaughter it's people if he managed to get his army to Sparta. The Spartan reply was one word; "IF". The belligerence behind that one word made me chuckle.
If anyone has any quotes they would like to share, I would love to hear them.
Best Wishes, Paul

I remember reading a book full of Spartan Quotes and apart from the more popular ones was that an Ephor had received a deligate from Athens who addressed an open audience. The deligate however was wearing a hair piece to hide his baldness which the Ephor had noticed. The Athenian having finished his oritory was rather pleased with himself and asked the Ephor what he thought of his speech... to which the Ephor replied "How can we believe a word you say when you wear a lie on your head".

Following the 2nd Punic War, Hannibal was a Carthaginian exile in the court of Antiochus III. Prior to the battle of Magnesia in 190 BC in Asia Minor between the Romans and the Seleucids, Antiochus asked Hannibal whether his impressive army, in their fine rich clothes and gilded shields, would be enough for the Romans. To which Hannibal replied, "quite enough for the Romans, however greedy they are."

I can't think of any quotes from this period, so I will go astray.
MacArthur on Eisenhower: "Best clerk I ever had".
Eisenhower on MacArthur: "I studied drama under him for 8 years in the Philippines".

The Spartan reply was one word; "IF". The belligerence behind that one word made me chuckle. Well, of course, there is the equivalent laconic response to Alexander when he asked whether he should come as an enemy or a friend: NEITHER. My personal preference: During a Roman Civil War, Pompaedius Silo said to Gaius Marius, "If you are a great general, Marius, come down and fight it out." Marius replied, "If you are a great general, make me fight it out when I do not wish to do so!"

There are some good ones. I also like the story of when Diogenes met Alexander, when Alexander offered to give him anything he wanted and Diogenes replied "stand out of my light"!

My favourite Mongol proverb, very useful when playing Mongols in DBA with their weak LH elements:
"Айвал бүү хий, Хийвэл бүү ай" (aibal buu khii, khiibel buu ai)
Roughly translated as "If you are afraid, don't do it; if you do it, don't be afraid".

And similar to Gregorius - my favourite quote is embedded in my signature block - although it is from the movie 'Lion In Winter' so may not be a true quote from Henry II
Henry : The Vexin is mine
Phillip : By what right
Henry : Because it has my troops all over it. THAT makes it MINE!
Cheers

"No Captain can do very wrong if he places his ship alongside that of the enemy" - Horatio Nelson
I have been reading the Richard Bolitho novels by Alexander Kent, and the latest one that I am reading has that quote just before chapter one.
