Ken,
Sounds good. Arab conquest? Berber? (or earlier like Numidians and Moors?) or perhaps immigrants like Vandal?

Well this DBA style array of 12 elements (8 sword and buckler and 4 arquebusiers) owes more to the DBR army lists than history!! These 28mm conversions from Hindu warriors (only by means of a new hairstyle) are my make-do African allies, complete with many charms, to ward off evil spirits, for my Portuguese buccaneers of the 15th century. Their hair is (in somewhat exaggerated) Shona hairstyle (because I can't manipulate the milliput any smaller to create four tuft like pony tails)! However I have not found any evidence of the Shona being armed by the Portuguese, or trained in the Portuguese style as here, or even of the Shona being employed as auxiliaries. So this part of my force is a bit ‘Hollywood’. The Portuguese employed locals in this auxiliary role on the Gold Coast, of West Africa (at Elmina and later Benin, according to Penrose pp43-5 and John Laband, p41). And they later created allies within Kingdom of Congo, (again Laband) as well as Swahili (Zanj) Muslim allies at Malindi in East Africa, and allies in Cochin, India (from whereabouts, 130 'slave soldiers' accompanied Estevao da Gama in his expedition to Ethiopia, from Laband p94). So far my research cum reading has yet to delve into the slave wars in the Kingdom of the Congo nor the later wars that engulfed Angola, or the river Zambezi hinterland. CarlL

Very nice taster Les1964. Obviously PaulIsper is to be congratulated on his excellent army (one of many it appears from the variations he can field). Nice one Paul. CarlL

Haardrada, the Ghaznavids are an interesting army and I hope you enjoy painting them. Best wishes CarlL Thank you Carll, I've had the army in my mount unpaint for a few years and have been distracted by too many goodies in the purple book.😁 I wasn't happy with some of the original figures I chose which added to the delay...and know I'm in recovery from a knee replacement operation what better time to tackle the project.🙂

The "slight adjustment" in paint pallet has worked...by swapping for a few more neutral colours I've avoided the archers looking like the United colours of benetton or a packet of vintage coloured spangle sweets!

That could cause a problem if your opponent props an element in his mouth in place of the real deal.

Haardrada, good to hear of your progress.
Ghaznavids must have sat on or near some of those silk roads and had access to Chinese silks and Indian cottons as well as influences coming from Persia and Islamic traders. I would surmise they had strong links with Turkic pastoralism too for trade in woollen (whether sheep, camel or goat hair)goods so probably a lot of diverse colours and cultural impacts.
Enjoy your painting time while getting new knee into gear... all the best for post op recovery & progress CarlL
