I am very pleased to announce that, once again, the Bakewell Midland Open on Saturday 8 June is being sponsored by Tin Soldier UK tinsoldieruk.com/ who are donating a very exotic army as prize for the winner. The following players are attending: Craig Allen Baldie Martin Myers Arnaud Marmier Patrick Myers Stepheb Finn Mark Johnson Rob Rush Nick Wright Carter Peter Duckworth Phil Johnson Frank Shaw Patrick Dale Phil Steele Scott Russell Keith Murphy Keith Brown Andy Wheeeldon First game will start at 1015 with six rounds altogether. First two rounds will be random selection with Swiss chess after that. The venue is the Medway Centre Bakewell. www.medwaycentre.co.uk/contact/ There is free parking available. Mrs W will be baking the usual goodies and there will be free tea and coffee. Any army from Books I to IV can be brought. Allies are allowed. The composition of all armies must be decided before the first round, including whether elements are mounted or dismounted. There is no dismounting during the games. Do bring along any terrain that you will need if defending. If you are able to bring along a board, that would be most helpful. Do let me know if you have any questions. Simon

Thanks for a most excellent, well organised competition. First rate. Pete, I see that you ran Polynesians. How did they fare against horse heavy armies? Cheers,

An interesting mix of armies. Two thirds from book 2. No preponderance of knights or elephants. Nothing that could be considered cheesy or devious.
Also I am not sure I heard a single (polite, obviously) dispute or disagreement in the course of the entire day.
Probably worth saying that the final table was much closer than the list is able to show. If I remember correctly the top eight were all only one extra victory away from the first placed player's points total.

Even when I tried to say I thought I could be double overlapped on same flank, first by table edge then by a unit, I was told I couldn't. That level of devious honesty should be the standard in all war gaming.
I still got crushed of course but at least it was a good old fair drubbing.

I thought the scoring system worked well. 3 points for a win, nothing for losing but 1 point for a draw. There should be value in not losing. No points for a draw if you have an army that is overmatched by its opponent tends to create false games. Make the superior army take chances and overstretch itself. Certainly didn’t produce any negative games for myself (quite technical interesting ones if anything), and if you just sit in a corner hiding you end up lower mid table with no chance of winning. Well done for me who came up with the system! Craig
