Maybe others will not like the effect, but I sure do.
For my Biblical battles, I am just using a tan coloured blanket I found in the hamper closet and taped it to a left over piece of drywall.
I picked up some moss from the dollar store and then I ground it up with an old coffee grinder, and then sprinkled it on top of the blanket, and then sprinkled some red sand that my daughter brought back from a trip to P.E.I.
You can see a pic from the link below:
The nice thing is, I can easily switch it up as it is not permanent, and the blanket has enough friction that the bases don't slide around.

Maybe others will not like the effect... No apologies needed. I think it all looks great! I especially like the bits of vegetation along the edge of the Waterway. BTW, it looks as if the big, bad Assyrians have somebody penned up against the shore. Whom are they facing? Oh, and the Assyrians' siege tower Camp looks great too. (And it can double as a lifeguard station. Grins.)

Thanks guys!
The setup is for the battle of Til-Tuba, and the Elamites are the ones with their backs to the river Ulai.
I used a waterway instead of a river, as based on the records of the battle, the river was unfordable at the battle site, and I wanted recoils to be deadly and not just fleeing results.
The pieces of vegetation are bits of that fake plant stuff you get from the dollar store, and then stuck them in pieces of DAS clay, which I like since it is air drying clay.
As for the lifeguard station, it is from a 1/72 scale battlefield kit from Italeri. I am pretending that it is a siege tower in the midst of being built, as the Assyrians press on towards Susa.

I went to Home Depot last week and bought a piece of 1/4" thick 2' x 2' MDF board. I plan to paint it grassy green on one side & sandy desert on the other side. Then I will be all set for 15mm scale standard size battles.

The battlemat looks great! Following the advice of Texas Maximus, I went to JoAnn's fabrics (and was the only dude), and bought a couple of yards of "Reets Relish" cloth. The coloring is perfect. www.joann.com/20pct-wool-felt/xprd986558.htmlCut out a 24", and a 32" square. Also bought a couple of yards of lighter brown felt. Works great! On the less cheap side, Cigarbox is having another kickstarter late this coming summer for a double sided fleece cloth. I'll be buying 6x4 desert + snow..

Wow, you certainly like to battle in extremes! I will stick England's green and pleasant land I think. Early Imperial Rome V Ancient British and War of the Roses. Chilly fog on the morning of the Battle of Barnet is extreme enough for me thanks!

People may be interested to know that Aldi supermarkets are currently selling a 2m x 1m grass mat for £6.99. Looks like the Games Workshop ones. Worth a look.

Simon I got one last time round and have done loads of hills and woods from them for DBA and Lart. Still got enough to cover a board or two if I thought I could cut em straight enough.
