Apparently, there are no rice paddies in Japan. I only discovered this as I set to lay out a pair of rice paddies (pictured above) for my III/55 Early Samurai army at Tony's "Asian Persuasion" event at Recon 2022. Nope. Can't be done. Rice paddies are described as Enclosures (Pg.6). Enclosures are not included as options for Hilly topography. All Japanese armies have Hilly topography, except for the Emishi (Forest), so they can't have them either.
And yet I have seen many rice paddies in Japan.

Maybe the Japanese just prefer not to fight in their rice paddies.

A rice paddy field sounds and looks pretty much like a Marsh to me... ...not that helps, as Hilly regions can’t have Marshes (but Forest regions can). Thank heavens for "House Rules" ...

I wonder if the terrain choices were based on general home topography or topography of battles fought in that area?
I also wonder exactly how many ancient battles actually had any terrain that had an impact?
"Hilly regions can’t have Marshes (but Forest regions can)." Ah Stevie, but what about hilly forested regions?!!! (Most hilly areas before significant forest clearance??!)

Paul,Strange, DBM and DBMM do have enclosures for the III/54 Early Samurai, however, both rule sets tailor the terrain for each army listed. Grouping terrain options in seven categories, simplified the selection process for DBA players. Adding enclosures may satisfy the Samurai armies, but would this be applicable to others listed?

> I also wonder exactly how many ancient battles actually had any terrain that had an impact? > A VERY valid point……our battlefields bear scant resemblance to many of the ancient and medieval world.

When I was a lot younger I went through battles listed in the Armies and Enemies books to see how many actually mentioned a terrain feature, (not exacting research I grant you) but I seem to remember hardly any mentioned anything, maybe a low hill on one flank etc presumably because generals didn't want anything to disrupt their troops formations as they engaged the enemy so chose a nice flat plain?
However, playing DBA on a flat board may be more historical in some circumstances but I don't think it would be as interesting!

...Marignano in Italy 1515 and few battles in late Japan could be quite similar or any far east battles....
