Do you guys use washes? Do you have a favourite brand and do you go for colours or a general purpose wash?
Painting miniatures has made me realise that I am quite a fickle person in some ways. I have been oscillating between the black undercoat and white undercoat methods of painting and I find myself going through a white primer, block in, wash and highlight phase at the moment. I'm using the Dark Tone Army Painter quickshade as a general all over wash which I think is quite good and seems to be quite effective.
One thing though, I'm confused about ink washes versus commercially prepared washes, what's the difference? Is one better than the other?
Cheers, Paul.

Hi Paul.
For 15mm I use white undercoat, block paint, then the range of Citadel washes. Particularly useful are Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil. Selective drybrush highlight. Then Vallejo matte varnish.
Cheers
Jim

Salutations !
I've been using homemade 'Magic Wash' - here be recipe: 4 parts distilled water 1 part 'Pledge Floor Care Finish' 1/20 part (drop or two) Windsor & Newton Artists' Acrylic Flow Improver' Pigments - I'm using Blick Matte Acrylic (their top-of-category brand of 'craft paint'). Have one jar tinted with 'Dark Green Deep', one with 'Dark Blue Deep' (these two are translucent colors), one with 'Brown'
More pictures of the results will be coming, but stuf promised for Cold Wars to finish first.

It really does make a difference and avoids the "dirty" look of a uniform black or dark brown wash. But then again, "dirty" is probably more realistic. Speaking to a much better painter than me, he explained that the washes seep into the acrylic water-based paints. So you can use them to get some colour blends (e.g green-blue, red-purple, etc). Cheers Jim

I second the Earthshade, and/or Delvin Mud. Problem with Citidel is they keep changing the names even if the colors are similar.
Black undercoat, block painting, some kid of dark brown wash unless it’s blue (blue wash), then highlight/dry brush over the top

I find GW products are really overpriced I'm afraid. Last time I looked it was 6 euros for a tub of wash! Yikes!! 🤔

I use to use washes when painting 28mm role playing figures but went away from it when I started painting on mass for wargame armies. However for my recently painted War of the Roses figures I started to use dry brushing to pick out chainmail etc.But I have not used washes again.

Seems that way. I gave up buying GW stuff many years ago when I was just a nipper, as I just couldn't afford it and I remember being very disappointed about it at the time. The same thing happened with the Total War series, it was just pay one price get a whole game. Now they have more DLC than you can shake a stick at! And the evil empire got their mits on that too, bah humbug! The bitterness lingers on I'm afraid.
