Thanks for posting this, I'm building hoplite armies at the moment, I might check it out. If you are interested in refighting ancient battles have you looked at Lost Battles by Phil Sabin? I think there are 35 battles in all. It's a separate gaming system but I bet you could use it to recreate DBA battles too.
Incidentally with lost battles you can refighting the battles with a pencil and paper or with the PC as well as with miniatures. I have a copy, I think I will take it on holiday and read it when and if I get a quiet moment. Cheers Paul.

DBA is not the only game in town, and other systems have interesting ways of modelling combat/morale etc. I also recommend the Peter Sides' books (2 volumes mainly for DBM), and the Great Battles of History for DBA 3.0 by Joe Collins. Really good stuff!

And then there's this, right from the preview page: Finally, one of the more intriguing insights gained from reconstructing 4th century combats is that some celebrated campaign and battlefield successes attributed to the use of ground- breaking tactics were, in fact, very closely run affairs. Their outcomes could have gone either way and were often every bit as subject to the whims of choice and chance as to any tactical maneuver. Recognition of this reality fosters an enhanced appreciation for the phrase “fortunes of war"
That. Sadly, only focuses on the later hoplite period, where the term "hoplite" could have evolved away from "Greek city-state reservist" to "full-time Greek-speaking mercenary".

The Later Hoplite army lists provide a bit more variety to the armies, with peltasts and a bit of cavalry too, which for me is more interesting to play with and paint😀

Later hoplites get the lights and even the dreaded Theban 8Sp Although I’ll miss the Spartan horde element I’ll make one of those just in case. But I still love Thessalians. All that horse!

I'm painting Xyston miniatures and trying to do them justice, although I'm not so good at putting the shield decals on🙄

I'm painting Xyston miniatures and trying to do them justice, although I'm not so good at putting the shield decals on🙄 Just re read this. Sorry I was too busy trying to show off my shiny Saxons than recognize that a) shield transfers are indeed hard to put on and b) I cannot imagine what it’s like in 15mm... but we’re gonna try!

I'm painting Xyston miniatures and trying to do them justice, although I'm not so good at putting the shield decals on🙄 Question about fig choice Wyvern (and to the general community): When using Xyston figs: 1) What do you use for Spartan 7Hd? 2) What do you use for EAP Persian 3Ax Armenians? 3) What do you use for EAP Persian 7Hd? The other troop types look like they all have good representation, but looking at Xyston's site, I can't decide what to do.

I've not done Spartans yet but the 7Hd were Helots who were slaves. I don't know for sure but I think they would be equipped like Psiloi. As for Armenians and Persian Horde I don't know but I'd like to know now you've raised the issue. At first glance I cant see the appropriate figures. I think Xyston are still working on their Persian range. The best bet would be to email them and enquire perhaps, unless someone from Fanaticus can help. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. I want to build Spartan and Early Persian DBA armies soon too so it would be cool to get an answer. Cheers, Paul.

Greedo:
For EAP Hordes I ordered a variety of figs from Essex... and clean out my ancients fig boxes for any vaguely ancient looking figs with a variety of weapons. I have over 14 EAP Hordes stands. Egads. Of course, I have 7 EAP armies.

Wowzers! seven Persian armies, that's dedication Joe.
Greedo, yes, try looking at the Essex DBA Persian armies. It lists the type of figures used so you could get an idea from that perhaps?
