Dismounting Knights In the past I have simply allowed this as part of the rules as written. But I have noticed that other tournaments require the player to state at the start of the tournament which option they will use for the duration. What are the thoughts of the rest of the community. While I think about it I have never required players to submit their army list as they enter the tournament. Is this a standard practice elsewhere? I would much prefer to play all rules as written. Otherwise you will be banning allies to prevent 5 Elephant armies, or littoral landings by allies or whatever.
Dismounting isn't the big issue it was under version 3. Most of the tournaments now banning it (or fixing the choice for the whole tournament) did so because one very good player won a couple of tournaments using a particular army where it was quite effective.

My personal preference would be to play the rules as written so thank you for that. Puts more importance on reading the rules thoroughly before the tournament.
I didn't want to be sticky about mixing scales so thank you for that as well. And since this is a figure game rule set I think we really have to say the 'counters' we use ought to have figures on them.
Penarth Wargamers are having a search through the club's storage area to find the boards. I'll keep you posted.
The trophies have safely arrived so some good news at least!

Good news re the boards. Still on course to be there. How quick does the car park fill up? If I get there by 9:30 am I likely to find that it is full?

Sadly I cannot make it now. Got a cold that came on yesterday and kept me up half the night coughing and spluttering and not much better today. Best of luck to all taking part.

Last minute queries seem to have been answered. Car parking has not really been an issue in this new venue. I'll be departing shortly, (5:00am), to help with set-up. See you all there!

Last year was the first Welsh Open I had missed since I started playing DBA Tournaments at Penarth 10 or so years ago. I really enjoyed the "return". No longer worrying about succumbing to hypothermia in a squash court and blessed with daylight, it is a great venue. I miss the train journey, but I do not have as long a drive as many others. For me it was a return to old times, in that I played all those regulars I first played on the "circuit". I took Cassander, or Kassandros, if you prefer. Why? I could not think what to bring and current painting projects are taking far too long. So, having been toying with a trip to Thessaloniki, having just finished reading Errington's "A History of the Hellenistic World" (recommended for the history rather than battle reports), I went for the founder of that city! Kn general, Cv, El, Ps, 4x4Pk, 4x4Ax felt like a balance of speed, heavy hitting, good and bad going... I was drawn in a group with Martin Smith's North Welsh with Feudal allies, Ollie Currant's Henry Tudor and Richard Pulley's Anglo-Danish with Welsh ally. All of my five games on the day were thoroughly entertaining and absorbing for me, I will aim to put some battle reports on another thread. The group finished with three of us on two wins; I went through to the semi-finals based on better nett element difference, having had two strong margin victories and a 4-3 loss to Ollie and Henry Tudor, decided by an artillery piece levelling my pachyderm at 3-3. The semi-final was against Colin O'Shea's Hatrans. A road down one side was cunningly used by them to spin the battle through 90 degrees, but to no avail in the end. The final brought on Arnaud and dice-rolling star, Ash, Marmier, with their fast foot Guti. Luck was with Cassander and the Welsh Open trophy to boot! Many thanks to Penarth and District Wargames Society for an excellent event and to Alan Davison for running the Tournament, and to Magister Militum for supporting by providing prizes...and of course to all the competitors, all too many of whom I failed to catch up with on account of lengthy, thrilling games with little time in between.

With so few open tournaments on the UK circuit it is always a joy to take anything I like to the Welsh Open. As I had painted some northern Arabs recently I brought Hatrans and to steady the massed bowmen I added a Parthian ally. All went well in the first couple of games with luck appearing at just the right moments but, of course, it did not last. However a third place trophy added nicely to the three others loaded into our car at the end of the day.
Unpacking last night, I seem to have mislaid my DBA waterway. I packed it for use with a second army I hoped to use in the plate competition but I didn't play in the plate, never used it and donโt even remember taking it out of my bag. It consists of two one foot long pieces of hardboard depicting a beach and the sea; does anyone know of its whereabouts?
Thanks Alan, great fun as always.
Colin
