My III/20b Sui Chinese went into the Dunk Tank™ recently for "Horde Enhancement" (rebasing on the optionally deeper bases). I painted an additional three figures (15mm Essex) per Horde. Here's an in-game view of some of them. (15mm Essex.) I really thought a human-wave assault would work. I was sorely disappointed. We played two very entertaining, intense games. Only once, could I get even a single Horde element "stuck in" against his magnificent 8Bw elements. -- Next time, Eric!Perhaps a mind stimulant to send them on their way, such as rice wine or lotus weed.
I do like the mass effect created with the extra figures and base size.

The armies look impressive, thanks for sharing the photos.
Six elements of 7Hd, what is not to like about this army! My own solid horde performed poorly in their last outing, but I only have four stands, which clearly is part of the problem!

Nice looking elements Paul (and Ed)!
I have purchased the figures - Outpost - but haven't gotten them in the queue yet to do a BBDBA Sui army with the max 18 elements of HD.
I expect it to be hard to work with (2 pips to move an element or group...), but the thought of watching an opponents face at setup will be worth it. That and potentially having a 19 element command that could lose 18 elements before breaking (50 percent breaks the army)...

Ah...not quite Goragrad. Page 13, paragraph 9, last sentence, says:- “A command that has lost half of all its original troop elements is removed.” Note that it does not make an exception for SCh, Hd or civilians... ...unlike the first sentence of paragraph 9, which does exempt SCh, Hd or civilians when determining when a command becomes demoralized. So your 19 Horde element command won’t become demoralized when it has lost ⅓, but it will be removed when it has lost ½ of them. I chose to base mine on 40x30 because it makes them look more DENSE.

I chose to base mine on 40x30 because it makes them look more DENSE. Terribly gamey Honestly if I had to do it again, I would put 7Hd on 40x40 and 5Hd on 40x30.

Just took a look at my generic peasant Hd on 40mm squares. One of them is 8Hd. +1 on the die?

-1. The troops are so congested they cannot bring all of their weapons to bear.

-1. The troops are so congested they cannot bring all of their weapons to bear. Bob, I'm guessing that's mostly tongue-in-cheek, right? Here's a view of all six of the Sui Solid Hordes, posed in front of the Imperial Coy Pond. Someone smarter than I can do the math, but I don't think 10 figures on a 40x40 base is much denser than 7 figures on 40x30. I enjoy the overall look. And I think it's amusing that those 60 figures (more than in some entire armies) are all utterly expendable.

I reckon the 7 figures have about 7% more space to swing their weapons. Scott

Ah stevie - pays to read through completely before commenting even when in a hurry to get back to painting.
So a command containing multiple HD elements in BBDBA is more brittle than an equivalent DBA army - interesting.
One wonders if the last sentence there should have also shown up in the Winning the Battle section of the base rules?

One wonders if the last sentence there should have also shown up in the Winning the Battle section of the base rules? When you come to think about it, this BBDBA rule does kind of make sense. I think that most people would agree that Hordes, with limited military experience, poor weapons, and questionable morale, are hardly likely to ‘stand-and-fight-till-we're-all-dead’ like elite Spartans! Other than that, all I can say is...”I didn’t write the rules”. On the other hand stevie, this is like the DBM battles at the club back in the day where my Palmyrans broke due to the loss of BW(I) (speed bumps for heavy cavalry) with nary a cataphract biting the dust.
If the losses were confined to those poor HD elements how likely is it that the regulars are going to shrug and fight on?
