I am wondering which armies would the Normans & Italo-Normans have been fighting here and what is the correct DBA army for them? I am reading a history of the Normans and the enemy are referred to as "Saracens" in it. Not sure if that is factually correct or if that is a generic term for the Arab forces that the Normans encountered. Thanks. |

Try EMNAS - Early Muslim North Africa and Sicily. Roughly III/33 or 34 or 35, at a guess.

In the 1063 Battle of Cerami, the Muslim army included a large contingent of Berber troops under the Zirids - which would probably be best represented with an allied contingent of III/75 Islamic Berber; it seems the Zirid army remained in Sicily for the next few years and left in 1068.

Didn't the WRG book Armies of Dark Ages 600-1066 by Ian Heath pub. 1980 cover this pretty well? That book was a classic.

In the 1063 Battle of Cerami, the Muslim army included a large contingent of Berber troops under the Zirids - which would probably be best represented with an allied contingent of III/75 Islamic Berber; it seems the Zirid army remained in Sicily for the next few years and left in 1068. The EMNAS and Islamic Berber lists do overlap each other yet they are not allowed as allies...my guess is that the choice of Berber elements throughout the EMNAS list is suppose to represent the Zirid armies...the troop type and quantities are simular when you compare both lists except the EMNAS can't have Tauregs or Guzz.They can have a Christian Kn element by taking Andalusian allies. |

I just got that book last week. I'll have to take a look at it later. This Battle of Cerami was incredible. Normans on a hill outnumbered something like 70 to 1 and they came away victorious. Try that on a wargaming table & see what happens!

And I write that as a man with 2 Arab armies who is slowly assembling a third. |
