I used to hunt for small boxes of varying size for each army, usually they would be open topped - chocolates, highlighter pens and erasers and other similar with a view to having as little bare space. I would then find a very large box to store the armies as a campaign set. Back then I based my figures on thick cardboard.
Now I use pre cut bases from Olympian Games that are wood with a magnetic strip glued to the bottom. I hunt around for small tins (tea, chocolates and similar) and then still go for the big box for the set. Many of the cafes close to where I work get their cakes delivered in a large box that is big enough for about 10 armies and high enough that no spears get bent, but low enough that I can store several of them. The trick is to catch the café staff when the muffins are being delivered.
cheers

If my army loses (which is often) I just chuck em in a carrier bag for letting me down!

I have put magnetic sheet under all my bases. They are transported in metal containers of various sorts, but mostly in tool boxes. For storage, I use a mixture of tool boxes and card board boxes.

As Felixs, I also put adesive magnetic sheet under each bases. While before I was also using metal box of any sorts, I recently shifted to HELMER metal drawers units by IKEA. Bases stay firm in the drawer during transportation, I can transport several armies at once with no trouble, drawers can be labelled which helps keep things in good order. Not to say that they perfectly fit in the car trunk.

Most of my HOTT armies are based on Precision wargames services steel bases. Then housed in file boxes for 15s or really useful boxes for 28s. I also use sheets of magnetic tape to stop them moving about. I have lots of unpainted figures stored in Chinese takeaway boxes.

I do it the other way around and use steel bases and put the magnabase on the bottom of a 4 ltr really useful box.
This holds the figures so well that you can even turn the box upside down without suffering casualties.

Hadn't posted when you did the topic paddy649, but one caveat on the magnetic liner and steel bases - got a HOTT Undead army off ebay that was shipped in the storage box. Ersatz cigar box with a magnetic sheet liner and the elements mounted on steel bases.
By the time the post office got though with it a number of miniatures had been debased and or actually damaged. The Chaos dragon was a bit much for the magnet and with only peanuts for additional packing, came loose and did a number on the other elements.
Of course the Post Office puts a bit more stress on the storage container than most gamers would.

Goragrad,
Totally agree - I wouldn't rely on the steel bases and magnetic strip to ship figures....that sounds like a recipe for disaster. Also I wouldn't recommend dropping the boxes from over 4ft however, for normal purposes of transport to and from clubs & competitions plus storage this method works well.

Which is the best way to store figures? For my 10mm and 20mm figures I use tubs collected from used Chinese takeaways. (I do wash them! Rather spoils the effect if ones early imperial Romans smell of Chop Suey!) My 28mm ECW armies are in a complete wardrobe draw. My figures do not travel anywhere, I wondered how other people store theirs.

Mine are stored in box files and now plastic boxes from B&M other stores are available in the attic on shelfs
