The Thunder of Guns
French Ordonnance lined up against French Ordonnance and with five artillery pieces on the board my game with Arnaud started off more like something from a Napoleonic scenario than the middle ages. We dashed forward in the best tradition of the horse artillery, unlimbered between areas of bad going and began to blaze away. When the smoke cleared two bounds later all three of his pieces lay in crumpled heaps. What was that French expletive Arnaud? But hey, doesn’t the luck come in patches and change so suddenly in DBA! I pursued a little too rashly and my bows were picked off one by one as Arnaud skilfully took every opportunity to snap back whilst his bruised army withdrew into a corner. Great game!
As were my other games. With the large number of armies on the list featuring maximum armour plate, lots of bows and artillery I wasn’t surprised that games were decided quickly on open fields. Shooting from my four fast bows and two artillery pieces took a significant number of the enemy elements that I destroyed, with the knights usually hovering looking for easy prey. Phippsy bravely brought along Granadines, placed a board full of difficult hills and presented the best game of manoeuvre I had all day. One game was over so quickly we played a second just for fun.
Congratulations to Lindon who won the final in an armour plated infantry trudge to Arnaud’s start line. Arnaud’s grand battery was decidedly ineffective and some manoeuvering sideways didn’t make any difference. When Lindon’s blade line finally arrived to contact, Arnaud’s knight general disappeared beneath a flurry of pole weapons and was trampled underfoot. By this time a weary looking Arnaud could barely even manage a Gallic shrug. A to Z in classic rock references!
Thanks for a great afternoon PAWS
Colin

Really enjoyed the event and thanks again to Bill for organising.
Like a proverbial lamb to the slaughter I went for the Granadan Spanish. Hilly and Aggression 0, 4LH and 3x3Cb I thought could be an interesting challenge. I did actually defend in every round.
Had a plan with the terrain ie get as much difficult stuff in the middle and run around one of the sides with the LH, and focus an attack.
My first battle was against Colin with his French Ordnance. Unfortunately he had more 3Bw than me and his 2xArt loved my LH. A 4-0 loss
For the rest of the afternoon I felt as though I should have bought shares in plate steel or hardwoods as various waves of dismounted knights, Billmen or Pikes came in my direction.
However my next three battles were quite nip and tuck. Richard’s Soanishbwere too powerful in a rather too open battlefield (congratulations on a first tournament win?), Martin I managed to scrape a 6-5 win at the end against his Spanish, against Lynden it nearly went my way, then we realised we had missed a shooting exchange, I lost an overlap and then my 3Kn general drew a combat with a Cb I think and was destroyed. Paddy at the end with his beautiful figures was a 1-1 draw. But two more bounds may have led to a positive outcome either way.
So really enjoyed. I must must must ditch Light Horse.

My first tournament - so I was a real newbie but really enjoyed it. Thanks Bill and PAWS for running it. Here is how it went for me:
Game 1 vs Martin’s Italian Condotta was a learning experience. I got the terrain wrong and Martin pulled me out of sorts and got round my flank. My pike did well but just pushed and didn’t kill. Elsewhere I was out played and it went 4-1 to Martin. However a mentoring session with Martin followed and I shifted my tactics.
Game 2 vs Oli’s WOTR Henry Tudor. Unfortunately Oli paid the price for Martin’s coaching and with better terrain my pike got stuck into his bow and my artillery shooting over the new boggy ground worked well. Oli’s choice of Henry Tudor as a CP left him one element short on the offensive. It ended 2-5 to me.
Game 3 vs Paul’s WOTR. I was more confident and charged into his bow, blade and artillery. My gun and and hordes held his left flank. It flowed to and fro and with time nearly up it was 3-3. My bound and pike hit blade and bow again and with a lucky die roll it 4-3 to me as the whistle blew.
Game 4 vs Mark’s Sicilians. Lots of Cav and Knights. Mark did a proper job on me and pulled out of sorts early and flanked me with Cav and Knights. He alternated 6s and 1s for PIPs - I was throwing only 2s or less and could never land anything. I’d like to say my combat rolls were poor but in truth the match ups were mostly bad. I was out played and it went 4-1 to Mark.
Game 5 vs Phippsy’s Grenadines with loads of LH. For the first time I lost terrain and the table was dominated by difficult hills. Not ideal terrain for a Low Countries Army! I picked a small patch of flat ground and didn’t move as a complete corner sitting game killer (sorry Phippsy.) Shooting took out a LH and a 6-1combat roll took out my crossbow before my pike shored up the flank. Phippsy’s LH was bouncing off my pike and his bow hid out of range in the woods while I stood in the open. It was a stand off and the whistle blew at 1-1!
End result 2-2-1 and I wiped my nose! I probably didn’t bring the optimum Army for the tournament but it was fun playing with my newly painted Low Countries Army. I learned much and had a great time. Looking forward to the next tournament.

I opted to take Henry Tudor for a laugh and didnt realise that CP are surprisngly tough if they are engaged. Time constraints made me take a few allies as didn't have enough time to get the complete list painted (uni assignments and work plus two small annoying children ) Games 1 was against Pauls WotR a slow trudge up the field with a few shots being exchanged between both forces resulted in a few recoils which forced me back a litte and ended in a winning draw after I finally engaged the longbows in the final bound before time was called. Game 2 was against Paddys lovely Low Countries pike blocks, I swiftly went 2-0 down with my bowsbeing picked off, I pulled it back to a good position with taking two pikes out and rolling up the line but proceeded to lose the combat that could have won me the game and this swiftly followed both knights dying to bows and psiloi in combat and some blades being shot by Paddys artillery causing a 5-2 loss. Game 3 was against Lindons WotR and was a much quicker affair than previously, we sniped each others forces with 3/4 of the enemy longbows dead but my knights yet again got a kicking in combat against cavalry this time losing 4-3. Game 4 was against Martin and his Spanish with Venetian allies, the littoral landing caused all kinds of issues but I felt confident I could beat it back and pick off the remaining parts of Martins army, however as normal for the day, my combat rolls were less than great and after Henry had beaten off some venetian knights, he promptly got slaughtered by the Venetian blades which combined with a couple of other losses caused a 4-2 loss )maybe just 4-1!) Game 5 was against Richard's Spanish, the game was going comfortably until I managed to position badly and almost got my pikes wiped out from an outflanking manouever, fortunately they managed to survive and my longbows shot some knights ending the game as a 4-2 win to me finally!
