I've started a new thread to get rid of the question mark over the date.
The 2018 English DBA Open will be held on Sunday 28th October in Portsmouth. This tournament is sponsored by the SOA and Magister Militum. Full details can be found at portsmouthwargames.wordpress.com/2018-english-dba-open/

As most of you know, the English DBA Open is the final event of each year's SOA UK DBA League. And this year the top of the leader board is very close. I've just updated with the scores from the PAWS Autumn DBA the other week and we have a new leader, Arnaud Marmier. portsmouthwargames.wordpress.com/society-of-ancients-uk-dba-league/2017-18-scores/There is only one other tournament, this weekend's Bakewell Matched Pairs, before the Open.

And following the Bakewell tournament, Arnaud has been knocked off the top by Richard Pulley. Top five now as follows:
1.Richard Pulley - 81 points (3 tournament wins) 2.Arnaud Marmier β 72 points (3 tournament wins) 3.Martin Myers - 69 points (1 tournament win) 4.Colin OβShea β 67 points (1 tournament win) 5.Mark Skelton- 57 points (1 tournament win)

As I will need to organise the groups by army mid-range date before we can start on Sunday. I will need to close registration by 10 am (GMT remember) to get this done for a 10:30 first game start.
As in previous years, if you are definitely arriving by 10:30 but look like missing the 10:00 cut-off, I will accept booking in by email or text on the day or night before. You just need to give your army number and name (and if there is a change of aggression, terrain or availability of a particular element type, the appropriate date range).
Email me using my gmail address. If you want to know what this or the text number is, contact me beforehand using the email link on the PAWS website.

Great tournament with my two losses coming against the brothers Ellis, again, but finally managed to squeak a win against Richard Pulley!

Congratulations to Arnaud a worthy winner of both the English Open and the DBA League. Big thanks to Bill for sorting everything out on the day (apologise again for not filling in the score sheer properly) and across an entire year of tournaments. Well done to Colin who won the 'people's plate' competition.
Commiserations to everyone else, those dice just play the cruelest of tricks!
New season starts in two weeks so here we go all over again!
Tarrington here we come!

Well done Bill for wading through what seemed like a mountain of paperwork to get the ball rolling, dividing us into three groups, roughly labelled βBCβ, 1st century AD and second century AD. My Celtiberians fell into the BC group along with various Middle Eastern armies and some early Chinese. I chose this army because I like infantry armies and the Celtiberians have not been out of the box for so long. With aggression zero, 6 fast blades and 4 excellent psiloi I felt confident to face anything except knights in the open. Bring on those elephants Arnopov, I thought, but I never met any throughout the whole day! In my first game I had just got into a favourable position and begun to launch an attack from a difficult hill when time was called. 40 β 45 minutes just isnβt enough time for me. However, I only had one other draw throughout the rest of the day. But two draws and two losses saw me out of the competition at the end of the group stage. Three group winners and the next highest scorer went through. I didnβt see much of the semi-final or final being too busy playing in the plate competition which I really enjoyed. I started the day being anxious about my armyβs vulnerability to knights, but by the time of the plate competition I was playing more boldly, in two games facing up to knights in the open. These two games were particularly exciting with my front rank suffering but finally prevailing as the knights broke through and found themselves overlapped and in contact with my second rank. Sacrificial but probably historical.
Dreams of winning the league were dashed for some but Arnopov with a Classical Indian juggernaut burst through to the semi final against Diades (E A Persians?). Players had to then choose from a given list of medieval eastern European armies such as Early Polish and early Russian, the highest ranked player having first choice. In what must have been a long game, since I played two plate games whilst it ran its course, Arnopov emerged victorious and went on to victory in the final. Congratulations Arnopov on a glorious DBA year.
Thanks everyone, great fun. With two tournaments in November we will get the 2018/19 league off to a very swift start.
Colin

Well done Bill for wading through what seemed like a mountain of paperwork to get the ball rolling, dividing us into three groups, roughly labelled βBCβ, 1st century AD and second century AD. BC, 1st & 2nd millennium AD to be picky. This was purely by chance as it happened. We needed 2 groups of 5 and one of 6, and the dates of the armies people brought along just happened to fit nicely.
