An idea for simulating the Roman line system, exchanging Principes and Hastati to bring fresh troops to bear.
A Roman player ignores the first "recoil" result of the game.
They only get 1 per game to keep tracking simple, but it at least keeps the Roman line in cohesion for slightly longer.
Romans might not need help since the army is very strong, but thought it might spice things up a bit. Then again, how to deal with QK from Wb is harder to figure out.
Chris PS sorry for the flurry of posts. Been thinking about this all day...

In DBA I do not think you can represent the Roman three line system, and I have not seen or used a set of rules that did, so far.
The essential problem is that you get six units in DBA, three engaged and three waiting to come up and exchange, now because wargamers love overlaps the engaged units are usually going to be double overlapped.
Threat zones etc. prevent overlaps closing onto the flanks of the engaged units.
So you need some kind of rule to first give you a reason to have only three of the six units engaged, and second to provide the exchange mechanism. This needs to be specific to the Roman army between certain dates, and I can see EVERY wargamer wanting a special rule for their favourite army.
Sorry but I think this will come down to a "house rule".
Purely as an aside, some nearly 40 years ago I asked PB about this for 4th edition, without luck, my 25mm army fought two games with loads of sub-units, gave up and fought like other armies.

Fair points David. I suppose my idea was that a single Blade element represented 2 of 4 lines (Hastati and Principes) with the Triarii and Skirmishes as separate units. And you "invoke" the line swap once per game and immediately nullify all recoils that happened that turn.
Actually this brings to mind a new house rule, which I shall bring up in a new post.
David: You are absolutely right, this is a "house rule", in the House Rules section. I'm not against current DBA 3.0 which seems really great, but these are just random fun thoughts I've had to add some army flavor.

Always look at the bigger picture, your "house rule" is only your thoughts as an individual, and there is nothing against that being modified and incorporated into DBA or any other set of rules by somebody else.
House rules need to be accurate, correct, and most importantly be agreeable to other players.
The other problem is we know very little, we cannot get WW2 battles correct, so what chance have we got with Romans (difficult) or Ancient British pre the Roman invasions, let alone some others that most of us have never heard of.
