I think that clears it up for me. Sliding sideways the shortest distance sounds correct. I question the consistency of the rules in requiring movement allowance having to be used, but agree that is the correct interpretation. I think the most important point in the rules is the first sentence in the "Moving into Contact with enemy" section: "The general principle is that troops that would contact in real life do so in the game so that moving a front edge into contact with enemy always results in combat."
I'm not sure that some of the details always live up to that principle.

That’s how I understand it Kaybee. A group can only wheel or move forwards (rule 8.10), but there are two exceptions to this rule:- A group can move sideways when lining-up in an enemy TZ (see diagram 11), And can move sideways to conform (see diagrams 12d and 13b...and see 13e for when conforming is impossible). But this sideways move is only free if contacting an enemy front-edge (rule 9.9 and diagram 12d). Otherwise the group must to use it’s own movement speed to perform this sideways move. And if a group or element does not have enough movement to conform, then it cannot make contact (see diagram 10). Some potentially useful player aids can be found here, such as the “Quick Reference Sheets” from the Society of Ancients, and the new “Army List Corrections” file: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Reference_sheets_and_epitomes And this is the latest January 2018 FAQ: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ_2018

Steive is correct. You can hit and slide - but you must have the MA to pay for the slide on a flank/rear contact - generally in these cases its easier just to measure the move corner to corner (and shorter).
