As it will take along time to play enough actual games I thought I'd do an experiment for the 8Bw side-support using EAP and Hoplites. The conditions were:
- 4x8Bw v 4xSp
- Greeks diced for PIPs (simulating Greeks trying to break the centre for the win and needing to reform after disruptions)
- Persians had 1 PIP (simulating the Persians using most of their resources to break the flanks)
- Cease when all Persians destroyed
- 10 rounds using standard rules and ten rounds using side-support
Results: Standard rules the Persians survived 7.2 bounds and with side-support they survived 7.8 bounds
Observations: Side-support did give the Persians some opportunities to destroy a Sp in close combat but I couldn't get the rolls
Persians had more draws with side support, which didn't necessarily help as a recoil would have formed their line (maybe 8Bw recoil from Solid foot on draws?)
Side-support did enable the Persians the opportunity to retreat with one element left more often, which could add a few more bounds.
Hoplites attacked the two central elements first, trying to get a 5-2 match up on the flank. Stiffening the flank with an extra Sp should help.
Limitations: No bow fire prior to contact. Persians have a 20% chance of destroying one element if they let the Greeks approach but only 11% if they approach the Greeks (it's the TZ thing)
No General used
No side support from Sp +/- Horde tested
Conclusion: Side support will increase survival for the 8Bw but not by that much on its own. However, with mutual side support from Spears this could amplify.
So now to test with 4x8Bw+1Sp v 5xSp
Cheers
