Thank you Goragrad, Haardrada and Menacussecundus, There are some good suggestions here. The W&E Scots Irish levy and warriors would make an animated looking warband. I may be mistaken, but were not round shields the fashion at this time.
There are a few possible sources of oval or other types of shields in use in Wales during this period.Four Irish tribes had migrated to Wales during the late 3rd Century and were particularly present in Dyfed. Also it is currently under debate what extent South Wales had been Romanaized and what effect the Romans had on the tribes in this region. Lastly, the fall of the Sub Roman Kingdoms could provide captured/copied weapons and armour or ex-Sub Romans fighting for the Welsh. This might help as an outline of the period and more... www.earlybritishkingdoms.com/kingdoms/index.html

Sgt Major's Minis (old Feudal Castings) now defunct in US, but TSS/QRF in UK has a new line of Feudal Welsh, with light and heavy horse, javelin, spear, and archers.
I hope someone in US bought the old Feudal Castings range to re-re-re-release!

Are you (or any other reading this) aware of contact details for the Sgt Major Mini's owner, should I be able to persuade a manufacturer to take the range from him? Martin

Martin - here is the contact page from SMM - sgmm.3dcartstores.com/crm.asp?action=contactusThe website displays a message to use this if interested in purchasing the lines when you visit it. Back when the announcement was first made some commenters noted that there had been problems contacting the owner using the email, so nit sure if he is still watching is stated reason for giving up the business was a change in circumstances requiring him to move to a place where he would not have room to run the business. Not sure if the phone was a landline or mobile that is still active. As with Jeffrey I hope the lines are brought back (hopefully without recrossing the ocean - it would be nice to retain them as a US based manufacturer from the stand point of shipping when so many are overseas). Timurilank, the mention of Forged in Battle got me curious as to their figures and I visited the site. Were you aware that the Kickstarter puts the anticipated delivery of the figures in December of this year? Must say that some of the existing lines look fair. although some of their horses are a bit off to my eye. But then, some of the Museum horses appear to be the result of a cross between a horse and a ferret...

Goragrad, I was aware of the recent ‘unlocking’ of the Welsh and based on the earlier experiences of club members here I did expect a long wait period before a general release. Not a problem as I have enough opponents for the Vikings to create some interesting scenarios, so the Welsh arriving as a Christmas gift would be nice.

Timurilank.
It would seem that you have your solution. Unfortunately I've already committed to Alternative Armies - I'll paint up and showcase them - probably in advance of the kickstarter delivering. C'est la vie!
I get the notion of using Demonworld (the Warlords of Thain) - hadn't thought about those. All my HOTT armies are Demonworld and I like the range - hadn't thought of using them for the Welsh. You stress the lack of beards - I note that alternative Armies Welsh are all clean shaven - but I normally paint on beards, moustaches or stubble. Is this a big deal for you?

Paddy,
I had the impression facial hair included beards, but I was corrected; they wore only moustaches. I have Rangers and Wood Elves from Demonworld and enjoy their quality of figures very much and I suspected the Thain just might work.
From the Warlords of Thain, all I would need are three packs (skirmishers, spearmen and swordsmen) and the command pack to complete the Welsh. Adding some character figures and druids would round off the army nicely.

Martin According to posts on the TMP and LAF in April and May of this year, the 15mm SMM biblical and medieval ranges (formerly Venexia and Feudal Castings) have been purchased by someone in the US along with the casting equipment I hope they don't disappear like Frontier Miniatures, take a long sabbatical like GFI, or take a long delay relaunching like Historical Products! To try to get back on subject, I ordered enough TSS/QRF feudal Welsh to make a DBA 3 army 3/19a last night! Another foe for my Sub-Romans, Saxons, Irish, and Picts to battle! I will also expand it to a Strathclyde army later.

I have started a new thread re SMM in the News and Notices section. Simon Didn’t know SMM had the Biblical Venexia ranges. Another well known manufacturer who I recently contacted was interested in the ex-Feudal Casting ranges from Sgt Major Mins, but if, as jeffrey reports, they’re already sold on I guess we just have to wait and cross fingers. Peter,
My preference for bare-legged types stems from the large collection of Book II and III armies, which together with the other two books must well have passed the 100 mark. In short, they will make a nice change from the trouser, tunic and round shield already in the collection. Timurilank,
Thanks for this information. I was thinking of a rugby themed camp, and the thought of bare legged figures in army itself had me considering extending the rugby theme to the army itself.

Peter,
I had the same idea for a Maori camp, but with the umpire and linesmen fertilising the ground beneath the goal posts. If you do complete that camp here is some music to celebrate with: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bHpvopz8Ow&t=0s&index=10&list=PLevPCd1trgVXGr9KV3YC1RYgCOqwm9MHm

Just had a good look at the Warlords of Thain from RPE with a view to using them for the Welsh. Can't say I'm convinced. Lovely models but to me they are not right for the Welsh. I'm sticking with the Alternative Armies Medus Range!

For the warband 'a' list paddy, you would have to trim the spears down and possibly convert some to swords.
Until the new range is out from Forged in Battle, Essex is probably a better option.
As I noted, 15mmUK is my source for the 'b' and 'c,' although when I find them I do have a quantity of the Essex Welsh bowmen.

Paddy,
The Warlords of Thain would need help from Milliput; moustaches and the upper portion of the tunic would need to be added for 34 figures. Included in the personality pack is a mounted figure so the mounted option for the general is take care of.
