Many thanks for all the nice feedback in my II/12 Alexandrian Macedonian post. Jim1973 – I’ll take the comment “Drat you paddy649!” as one of the best compliments a fellow wargame can give and trust you found your afternoon going through your lead mountain productive.
As I said in that post I'm falling well short of my goal of showcasing 1 army per month….so to get on with it here is February’s much belated post. Moving on from one of my favourite Book II armies we move onto one of my favourite Book IV armies – the Teutonic Knights. As before this is an old army – rebased for DBA3.0 The origins of this army was George Gush’s WRG Renaissance rules (a development from WRG 6th edition ancients.) Well about 25 years ago I played a lot of Gush’s Renaissance games and, if the rules did have a fault, they favoured cavalry and heavy cavalry in particular. Well the Teutonic Knights were one of the few army lists that allowed an entire cavalry army to be fielded so I bought one…...and this is much of it.
The Knights are early Imperial Minifigs (before the horses arses grew out of all proportion) and the remainder are Alternative Armies Medus range (ex TTG) with the exception of the LH which are from Gladiator (now Black Hat).
This army was painted 25+ years when I was young and naive – so please forgive the Maltese crosses – a mistake in hindsight but I’m not that bothered so as to repaint. However, I’m quite happy with the grey livery and Tau crosses uses for the Sergeants and the infantry. You’ll note that the Allied knights look fairly bland with not much colour to them…that is because in parallel I’m painting up a Mediaeval German Army to act as allies….more to follow. Recent additions to bring the force up to purple book standard are the LH, Ax and Wb which are all new paints of figures long in the lead mountain. Lastly with this army I’ve only upgraded the lances to wire and better flags where I have had breakages – I’ll do the remainder sometime in the future. Oh and I do have the 7Hd – I just didn’t photograph them….bloody peasants!
This army is ferocious on the tabletop and there is nothing subtle about it. It has enough infantry to be solid and hold terrain, sufficient variation to be interesting, the spitz wedges can destroy pretty much any infantry in the open and if you are up against a cavalry heavy army than the 3Kn option is useful.
So first 2 pictures are of the whole army, with and without the spitz wedges:
