I received my Albanian army pack from Essex miniatures, and one of the horses for the knights is all decked out in armor.
I have been trying to find out if indeed the Kingdom of Albania used cataphracts, but have not found anything definitive.
I have read that many of the surrounding forces such as the Serbs and Bulgarians used cataphracts, so perhaps the Alabanians used them too?
I would love to use the horse for my knights, as he looks really cool.
Any replies would be appreciated.

Replying to my own question In accordance with the rules, I would say no, since the Albanian knights are 3Kn, and the description of knights in the rules has cataphracts as 4Kn. Sound reasonable?

Even before I ever played DBA I got screwed TWICE by Essex buying army packs for Armati. I vow to never buy an army pack again from Essex. It is even more frustrating as they do make the correct figures, but fail to include them. Friends don't let friends buy Essex army packs.

On thing to keep in mind is what the knights may look like. If you look at the DBM list for the Albanian army (I suspect that DBMM is similar but I do not own it) you will find that the Knight element represents: Only from 1450 AD: Italian, German, Hungarian and other mercenary men-at-arms With that said, these knight during this period frequently are fully armored with armored horses so depending on what figures you got they may be the correct ones. Were they something sort of like these? www.essexminiatures.co.uk/collections/15mm-medieval-later-medieval-early-renaissance/products/mer11

It looks like this: HorsesSince the pack was supposed to contain 3Kn, I actually received four horses and only two riders, so perhaps the cataphract horse was inserted by mistake, seeing that the other three horses are similar. Still, cool looking horse! Thanks again!

I guess I will keep the horse for another army. Off to read up on the Timurids

Indeed, Tony, as I noted in the 'Who's painting what?' topic, I picked up an Essex Old kingdom Egyptian RMA that has just 8 but 16 bodyguard spearmen.
Otherwise just about enough figures for a BBDBA army.
As to the horse, definitely looks like an Eastern or Middle Eastern armored horse.
Actually, not altogether inappropriate.
I have a number of Crusader and other knights from various manufacturers whose horses are armored.

To be fair though, Essex does give the exact composition of those army packs in the description on their website. So you can know exactly what you get.

Unfortunately, both my situations happened in 2001.
