Was looking at the Theban army list with their 8Sp, and then read about the battle of Leuctra where they defeated the Spartans: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_LeuctraSo I started thinking, how to best represent both the elite forces placed on the end of the hoplite's battleline, but also how to do a refused flank in DBA. For elite units, I was going to use my idea for skewed d12s to slightly give an edge to the elite Spartans and the Sacred Band. There there is the deep flank phalanx, easily represented by the 8Sp. The website describes the refused flank of the Thebans being screened by Ps (not shown in the map), so that makes sense. But my main question is how do you do this battleline in DBA? Do you just assume you have to use more PIPs to move them, but what about this (I'm ignoring 3Cv + 2LH for now)? 4Ax8Sp ___8Sp2Ps___2Ps___2Ps ______4Sp4Sp4Sp4Sp4Sp or maybe: 4Ax8Sp2Ps___2Ps___2Ps ___8Sp4Sp4Sp4Sp4Sp4Sp This would allow the battleline to advance with a single PIP until contact, and still screen the 4Sp with 2Ps, and allow the +1 8Sp + 1 General to smash into the Spartan's 4Sp + 1 General. The 8Sp loses the side Sp support, but this seems to jive with the battle.. Then there's the question of Spartan Hoplites vs Sacred Bank vs regular hoplites. I was going to use a skewed d12 to give then a slight edge over regulars, but perhaps with the deep and general would to be too much. Have to play test. What does the community think? Chris

With the option of the general also being and 8SP in 3.0 giving 2 of them, that would allow having them both 'up' allowing side support.
Otherwise if the Spartan is in a line formation you are looking at an 'evens' as the Spartan general will have side support while the Theban doesn't.
With the side support either would still be +1 and if the first combat fails the second will still be even.

Hi Goragrad, Just realized this too when I looked at the army list again. I thought there was only 1x8Sp! Holy crap, there's 2! Would make lovely looking stands. Not the most exciting battle, but would interesting to run anyway.
Actually has there been any houseruling about the hoplite side movement? Maybe for every full move forward, you have to do 1/2 BW to the right? That might an interesting thing to do with these hoplite battles. Looking again at the wiki, it's why the best troops were put on the right side of the phalanx to steady the whole thing, and the Theban's big innovation for this battle was to put their best troops on the LEFT facing the Spartan's best. And then they doubled up the depth to ensure that they'd win against them.
