The 2018 PAWS Summer DBA is less than 2 months away, on Saturday 19 May. So you will all need to know the theme, which is...

The allowed armies are
I/7 d Early Libyan I/43 b Skythian (not Hu) I/47 Illyrian I/48 Thracian I/56 b Later Kyrenean Greek II/6 Bithynian II/14 Ariarathid Kappadokian II/19 d Seleucid II/20 c, d Ptolemaic II/22 a, b, c, d, e Arabo-Aramaean II/23 a, b, c Later Pre-Islamic Arab II/24 Early Rhoxolani Sarmatian II/25 Bosporan II/26 Siracae & Iazyges II/28 a, b, d Early Armenian & Gordyene II/30 b, c Galatian II/37 Parthian II/44 Commagene II/46 a, b Kushan II/48 Mithridatic II/49 Marian Roman II/50 Hashmonean Jewish II/51 Late Judean II/52 Dacian II/56 Early Imperial Roman

Not only time to organise a DBA army but also time to read the wonderful Alfred Duggan novel 'He Died Old'. The epic story of Mithradates King of Pontus. As Amazon tell us a tyrant at 20, libertine at 40 and daring warrior at 68. What is there not to like?
Also an opportunity to read (some) of A E Housman's 'A Shropshire Lad', where the line 'He died old' actually comes from. A reference to Mithradates ability to ingest vast quantities of poison, unlike his guests who died!
Read on.

By one of these funny coincidences, I ordered "He died old" two days ago! Good. Some interesting armies there. Thanks Claudius

Great theme, Richard and Bill....
And by pure fluke the Ariarathid Kappadokian listed is one of the two painted armies up for grabs at next week’s Alton DBA.
Read the Duggan book many years ago.....well worth the read.

So the Early Libyans organised for the Spring event could be rolled out with some modifications in the Summer. Bet those other armies would love meeting them....

Great list Claudius.
Alfred Duggan – the original and still one of the best.

Great choice Claudius. It so happens that I am reading Duggan's Elephants and Castles, so already 'in the mood' for this list. Plus I have enough figures to make a number of the armies listed. I'll do my best to be there.

Got the weekend sorted now so I don't have the kids (old excuse of it being in between exams helped a bit ) Army sorted pretty much and it's one very similar to my Huns. No thinking involved for me, nice and straightforward!

Bill am I correct in thinking that any ally used (or elements selected) from the armies available on the Summer DBA PAWS list must fit within the date range 100BC - 1AD?

Just played two games vs Colin the Hittite (masquerading as Colin the Ariarathid Kappadokian). He used the army he won at Alton, and I randomly used very late Seleucids for game 1 (and lost 5-3 or so) and then Tigranes Armenian for game 2 (and scraped a 4-2 ? win). Looks like another fun and challenging theme....... Martin

In a similar vein, given that the 3Kn option in the Early Imperial Roman list represents the lancers formed by Trajan, are they allowed?

The list does not specify that the 3Kn are only available in specific dates, so they would be allowed.
