How do people paint mail on their miniatures. My inclination is to drybrush a dark silver or similar over a black base. But .. when I stop to think bout it, I recall that all the maiI have seen at re-enactments, museums etc is a dull, matt, grey colour that, from a distance, would look like a woolen jersey. Thoughts?

I'm pretty lazy. First I lightly paint on the metallic color then follow up with a black wash. Seems to work for wargame quality.

If you are after a grayish look try drybrushing with gunmetal rather than silver.

I undercoat the miniatures with a mat white. Chainmail and other metal items including helmets I paint dark grey, generally two parts black to one part mid grey. Dry-brush with silver, but sparingly so as to leave the dark grey exposed. Raised details (helmets, greaves, etc.) will lightly touch with white.

Base matt black dry brushed with gun metal and then a silver, then coated with lahmian medium with a touch of nuln oil added...this dulls the silver slightly but does still give a final effect of low lights and high lights.
Remember some eastern mail can be a bronze/gold effect...this I achieve by again starting with matt black but then dry brush with the bronze or gold.I then use a clear gloss varnish and allow it plenty of time to dry, then use the lahmian oil/nuln oil mix to dull the sheen of the bronze/gold...I think it looks ok.😊
