As I fancy a bit of a change, and I’ve always been interested in H. G. Well’s “War of the Worlds” (if you’re interested, here is the plan: ), I’ve recently bought a copy HoTT 2.1. But I have a a couple of quick questions. Do players use the suggested 100 paces = 1 BW, like DBA 3.0, or do they stick with the old 100 paces = 1 inch scale? And do 15mm players use the DBA larger 900mm/36” battlefields, or do they stay with the smaller 600mm/24” battlefields? Cheers Some potentially useful player aids can be found here, such as the “Quick Reference Sheets” from the Society of Ancients, and the new “Army List Corrections” file: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Reference_sheets_and_epitomes And this is the latest January 2018 FAQ: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ_2018
I prefer the upgraded version done by TomT (known here as medievalthomas) This includes the extra troop types and the subtleties we have become accustomed to with DBA 3. Using the recommended scale (1 inch = 100 paces) and the larger board I can imagine players falling asleep after five or six turns. However, the larger board would facilitate the placement of terrain, such as bad going and water features for ‘Lurkers’.

Oh I don’t know Timurilank…I could always prevent my opponents from falling asleep by telling them some of my never-ending jokes…this could even speed up play, as they dash forwards as fast as possible to get into contact just to shut me up! The reason I asked is because it seems a bit odd that an alternative faster move system is suggested, but there is no corresponding alternative table size offered:- Table Size:- 100 paces = 1 inch:- 100 paces = 1 BW:- 600mm/24” HI cross in 12 bounds HI cross in 7.5 bounds & aerials in 2 bounds & aerials in 1.25 bounds
900mm/36” HI cross in 18 bounds HI cross in 11.25 bounds & aerials in 3 bounds & aerials in 1.9 bounds
(Items in red are obviously too slow, while items in blue are too fast. The items in green, as Goldilocks said, are just about right)It seems to me that if people want to use the alternative move system, they should also use the larger table size as well… …just to keep the game mechanics in balance. We use BW units (of course) but I believe most of the "Old HOTT" community still uses "paces".
I think in D3H2 I slowed aerials slightly to accommodate the BW moves.
Since we play in 25mm one easy way to make a "movement stick" is to take a 12" rule (30 for the rest of the world) and divide into to 5 60mm segments (5X6 = 30).
If you have aerials move 10BW that's 2 sticks. If you let Art and Mages "shoot" 5BW that's one stick. If you make command ranges 5BW (out of sight) and 10BW other wise you can measure on "sticks" etc.
We use 4X4 tables (and have since DBA 1.0 which originally used 4footers for 25mm).

I have played many games of war of the worlds using HOTT, in 25 mm with BW measurement. These games were augmented with characters from the league of extraordinary gentlemen graphic novel. in This version I added the red weed. Every turn it would grow from one side of a hex. It was good going for any Martian, but bad for everyone else.

100 paces=1 inch on 600mm seems pretty similar to 100 paces=1 BW on 900mm. I'm truly interested in your thoughts as to why the latter plays better. As space is always a limiting factor I was wanting to stick to smaller boards and terrain pieces. Except for hoplite battles. They're in 75cm to allow a 40cm heavy infabtry deployment zone. Otherwise the phalanx takes some unusual shapes!

To be honest Jim, I don’t know. I just like large battlefields. Things look better when there’s a large gap between the armies and the edge of the table…especially as HoTT doesn’t have any ‘Phantom Table Edge Overlap’ rules. With Hordes being so cheap it seems too easy to have 15 or more elements on a small table that completely fills the battlefield, table-edge to table-edge. On the other hand, people have been playing HoTT for years without any problems, so maybe it’s just me being accustomed to DBA 3’s larger table size option. And nice pictures Bob, what with the creeping red weed concept. I know that War of the Worlds is old hat and hardly an original idea, but I’ve never given it a go till now. But there is another idea that I’d like to do that is original and I don’t think anyone else has attempted:- Has anyone out there ever thought of doing “The Venture Brothers” for HoTT? For those that don’t know, it’s a comedy cartoon about superheroes and villainous secret organisations. See watchcartoonsonline.be/watch/the-venture-bros-s1-ep7-ice-station-impossible/And watchcartoonsonline.be/watch/the-venture-bros-s1-ep10-tag-sale-youre-it/For those who know what I’m talking about, here is a very rough outline:- The Venture Brothers for HoTT.pdf (88.62 KB) Now there is no way I’ll be able to get figures for all of these (although someone has made a Brock Samson). So I’ll just have to take screenshots and use paper/cardboard ‘flats’ stuck vertically to flocked HoTT bases. Anyway, War of the Worlds first, then, one day…”Go Team Venture!”. I love HOTT, but play it as written with using 100 paces + 1 inch, on a 24 x 24 board. Makes for a fast , fun game. I personally don't see the need to change it, but that's why we have chocolate and vanilla. So why not give several versions a try and see which suits you the best.

Very well Terry…I shall follow your lead and stick to 100 paces = 1” on a 24” x 24” table. And if we find the battlefield too cramped for our liking we can always swap to 100 paces = 1 BW on a 32” table at a later date. For people who use 100p = 1 base width, do you apply this also to Stronghold sizes? Strictly speaking, the minimum size of a stronghold should become 80x80mm, which strikes me as a little excessive and certainly incompatible with many existing Strongholds.

When we converted HOTT distances into DBA3.0 distances for D3H2, a few had to be adjusted to adapt to Base Width units. Just use your existing Strongholds as in and adjust the minimum to accommodate Base Widths, this is too small a problem to lose out on the many advantages of using Base Width units.

I have been looking at how to recalibrate HotT and keep board size still at 24". I suspect the main difference between DBAv3 and HotT using BW movement is not the rates themselves per se. LH and Ps can move up to 12BW in a bound, PIPs willing. Riders would move 5BW, but only once. Artillery range would be the same in both games. Magic range might be a bit high at 6BW, and flyers have virtually unlimited movement, but in all cases, fleeing is an issue.
But what I really noticed as a HUGE difference is the bad going move rate. In v3, bad/rough going really slows down most elements. In HotT, a 2BW bad going movement rate makes a massive difference to the tempo of the game.
That said, inches on the standard board strikes me as really slow and plodding if you are used to DBA v3, not to mention the ultra-fiddliness of 2" wheels of a group, say.
So I like the cadence of 2BW bad going moves. Also getting armies into battle more quickly is good for Hordes, it would appear. And hordes may need a bit of help if they are too many (ironic, hey?).
To me, the designers wanted magicians to be able to attack artillery, say, without getting hit in return. Riders needed to be able to break off from Beasts, but again, not be able to charge into close combat with a magician without first being subject to possible magic attack, etc.
All of this argues for keeping move rates for Rider/Heroes/Magicians and magic attack range in the same relative proportions. Flyers and Command could be reduced I suspect without too many knock ons. So this suggests a bigger board is needed, unlike DBA v3, say, where the game is calibrated fine. But now aren't we just back to the HI footslog slowly across the map?... What to do, what to do...
