I have a friend who is a particularly good figure painter...I mean really good......I mean competition winning good. Sure I've won a few local competitions in my time but this guy is National standard! I own some of his Napoleonic Russians and Lancers of Berg....and they are beautiful: atelierrobin.wordpress.com/
Anyways - said friend has lost his painting mojo (long story) but recently sends me a message on the Lead Adventure Forum "I have been looking at ancients.... Probably DBA (urrgh) because of manageable sets of figures. What the heck! Did you ever get any Xyston figures? What do you think?"
So after the obvious response of "Hell YES!" I get to thinking...which army to recommend to a friend who can paint like that?
I thought of Burgundian and Nikephorian Byzantium...but he has previously done those in 28mm. So what you recommend? I'm thinking:
1. Skythian 2. Wars of the Roses 3. Later Achaemenid Persian
Any thoughts?

For a painting challenge, Samurai will always fit the bill.

HYW or High Medieval was my first thought as well, gregorious.
Complex heraldry would certainly be a challenge and a place to showcase talent.
