I was unable to attend Historicon but was able to make it over the NADBAG Summer tournament in Omaha Nebraska. I have not played DBA in several years. So I went in expecting to lose but have a lot fun and meet some folks. We were playing 2.2. The last time I played, 2.1 was the current version and so it was very similar. It was a Book 3 or 4 tournament. Scoring was 10 pts for the winner minus elements lost. Loser got points equal to elements they killed.
I took IV/22 Serbian Empire Ag 1 Hilly
1 KN(g)
3 KN
2 LH
3 3BW
1 AUX
2 PS
Game 1 vs Matt with Italian Condotta
KN, 8BW, PK, Bd, LH, Art
Unfortunately, My Serbs were invading Italy. This battle is a little fuzzy but it was back and forth. Matt was rolling 1s in combat that did not help his cause. At 3-3 losses, Matt was able to get a knight on my Aux in the open with an overlap and threw a 1 which bounced him off. I was able to get a kill in my bound, again with Matt rolling a 1 to win the game, 7-3.
Game 2 vs Steve Gross' Early Crusaders
KN, BW, SP, CAV, PS
Mean and nasty Crusaders invaded Serbia. I put down some terrain to help my lighter troops and anchored my forces on a wood. I sent my 2 LH around another terrain piece on the opposite flank and tried to scoot around 2 BW units guarding that flank on the first bound. Steve moved his main force towards mine and setup a shot on my LH which I avoided. I then was able to get both LH on one of his bow but I bounced off. Next bound Steve shot at each of my LH and if he recoiled me I was would have been off the side but I stood. I went back in with both LH and this time Steve rolled a 1 and QK'ed him. Steve sent a KN over to support that flank and shot at my LH again, but I survived. In the middle I lined up my troops and took some shots on Knights with my bow but with no significant outcome. My LH then QK'ed the second bowman when Steve rolled another 1. On my next turn, the LH QK'ed the KN he sent over to reinforce the flank when Steve rolled a third 1 in combat. My main line was not doing much as my LH were out of command range and sucking up all my pips. Then Steve closed in with his main line onto my left flank that was anchored in the woods and contacted my AUX with his spear and an overlap. I ended up doubling him for the 4th kill and the game, 10-0.
Game 3 vs Ryan Carlson's Papal Italians
KN, SP, BW, PS, Hd
Ryan and I both had 2 wins and the Italians invaded Serbia. I put down 1 Steep Hill in a corner. In the opposite corner I put a small wood and had a road running down the middle. Since Ryan only had 3 mounted, all KN, I wanted to take advantage of an open table with my 6 mounted. In my first bound I rushed my 2 PS across the table to assault Ryan's Hd on the steep hill near his baseline. I only rolled a 3 and Ryan rolled a 6 (5-6) so I had to recoil my PS. My 2 PS then spent most of the game occupying his 3 SP, 1 PS and the HD and protecting my BW from his SP. Ryan moved the rest of his troops to about the center line and I sent my LH to the other flank and ended up loosing one. The rest of the game my remaining LH faced off against 2 of his PS. In the middle our main battle lines had a staring contest. I lost a PS on the right flank against his PS and then I lost a KN when I sent a couple in against his KN/BW line to put the game at 0-3. Ryan was set up to take another element so I threw my general and other KN into his BW, threw my Aux into his PS and was able to shoot a knight in the back that had flanked my knight in a previous round. I still had another KN stuck in against Ryan's general. First the BW recoiled the KN but since he was shot in the back, he had to turn around and recoiled into another of his KN that was perpendicular and died. Then I had a KN with overlap against his BW so a 3 v 3 with the loser dying and my general vs a BW (4 vs 4) with same outcome situations. I rolled up on both combats. The KN vs KN combat ended up with a recoil. This gave me the game 4-3 with all 4 of his losses in one round. Luck was with me.
Game 4 vs Mike Sanderson's Nikaian Byzantines
LH, KN, CAV, PS, BW, SP
The Byzantines invaded Serbia and I cluttered the battlefield with 2 steep hills and 2 woods in hopes to limit his LH advantage. I put my AUX and a PS in the wood anchoring my left flank, my KN in the middle, my BW and 1 PS on the steep hill towards my left flank and my 2 LH behind the hill as a reserve. Mike put several LH on my left flank, a BW and PS on his steep hill, his KN, CAV, SP in the middle and PS in his wood on my right flank with a CAV and LH as reserve. Mike did a general advance. I held my left and middle while moving my LH up to try and flank the Byzantine wood on my right. I moved my BW and PS across my steep hill to face his wood. Mike sent his reserve CAV and LH to face off against my LH. I moved my BW in the direction. My then charged my 2 LH and bounced both my LH even with a 1-2 in his favor. I then was able to shoot his CAV with 2 of my BW and double him. I then charged his LH but bounced off him. Mike rolled low pips and was unable to do much since the LH was out of command range, so he moved his middle up and moved another LH from my left flank to reinforce where he lost his CAV. I did not do much as I was using my pips to chase his LH with mine which was also out of command range. I finally killed his LH and Mike shot and killed one of my knights with his BW that he moved to reinforce his main group. My AUX stayed in the wood but was able to threaten and zone off several LH due to the positioning of the terrain. My PS moved to support my KN(g) as I moved another KN towards Mike's main line. I was able to shoot and double one of Mike's KN and then my LH was able to catch and double Mike's reinforcing LH for the 4th element and won 9-1.
My daughter had wished me luck and I told her I was just planning on having fun. I did that but also got the luck she wished me. My 2 LH were MVPs and are now elite LH . They killed or were the direct cause of death for more than 50% of the elements I killed in the four games.
I want to thank Ryan Carlson for organizing and getting me to come to the event and to Steve Brady for hosting and running the event. Steve, Mike, Matt and Ryan were all great opponents and I did not play Trent but he was just as nice as the rest. Thank you to NADBAG crew for welcoming me and letting me win
