Just over two weeks to go. Who plans to attend? So far the list looks like :
Craig Allen Alan Davison Matthew Davison Mark Johnson Arnaud Marmier Colin O'Shea Richard Pulley Tim R Scott Russell Mark Skelton Martin Smith
with "supporters" Jayne Allen David Constable
Anyone can show on the day, it is just a matter of providing enough lunch, so let me know in advance if you can. If you have dietary restrictions, let me know and I'll aim to accommodate.
Phippsy, are you still coming?

Not the greatest day for my Chimu; they were painted some years ago for a themed tournament at which they did very well and haven’t had an outing since. Planning to bring them yesterday pushed me into updating them for version 3 by adding copper armour to the nobles. Unencumbered by horses and every element being Fast they should have swept away opponents in a blaze of dazzling Moche style tunics. I even gave them sympathetic terrain; what could go wrong? However, they did bring me the coveted Most Challenging Army Award. The Hampshire contingent has, over the years, developed a little game in which we try to outdo each other in bringing the weakest army. So this year Martin Smith has completely failed – on the drive home we were wondering how his Frisians, with 11 solid warband managed to gain the top army position? Did they not meet any of those knights...
In the first game I played Frisians against Chimu. It was looking good for the Chimu as their greater speed threatened both my flanks and the Chimu general burst through my line, but the dice turned it around for a narrow Frisian victory – the first of many, it seems.
Well, this tournament is like no other. Fancy your chances with the unlikely match up of a Sub Roman British army of largely solid hordes and light horse against Burmese? I played this game using the British. The hordes were sacrificed to the elephants whilst the mounted weathered the massed bow fire. Luckily the bowmen were dropping faster than the horsemen. What about massed Aitolian psiloi against Sassanid Persian cavalry... and so it went on. Great fun.
I won’t spoil Diades’ thunder by printing who won the tournament – but congratulations to you, you know who you are; not quite like the Scots facing the English at the end of ‘Outlaw King’ but to win this tournament you probably had some very tough games.
As a side show, David Constable brought his lead mountain (painted armies and unpainted) to be given away to players, asking only that they make a suitable contribution to a charity of their choice. I thought my lead mountain was big – David, your house must have given a great sigh of relief when you removed all that weight yesterday morning! I was interested in a few figures but David forced a whole army on me. David, I know you are moving on to other things but to part with this collection must have been difficult and to give it all away... such generosity! Thank you.
The Tarrington Tourney is one of the highlights of the UK DBA calendar. If you only like historical games this is not the tournament for you, there are others that meet that need. Here you will find a different kind of tabletop challenge and I recommend it.
Thank you, Diades, for an excellent day, supremely well organised.
Colin
