I once stared down the slippery slope of building HYW armies for FOG. That never took off and while going through the lead pile yesterday I came across some of the figures I started collecting for the project. Some of them look like Corvus Belli and some look like Essex (I have no history with either line). Now wanting to start for the first time DBA 3.0 (any DBA for that matter) I face the task of getting figures to either add to what I have (not much) or start something new. From what I understand since I started gathering the above HYW figures, Corus Belli is no longer making HYW, which is unfortunate since they look nice. Not sure about Essex but maybe painted they will look better. Either way, I plan of getting what I need at Cold Wars in March and hopefully the rulebook as well. So do I finish with HYW or go for something else being a new player? The majority of my war-gaming to this point has been WWII and Napoleonic's. Thanks in advance.

If you like HYW, do HYW. If you like something else better, do that.
And finish armies that you begin. With DBA that is usually quite possible and it feels much better if you have achieved something.
And try to avoid adding to the lead pile. (This probably means: Do HYW).

Welcome to Fanaticus and DBA. I have War of the Roses Lancaster and York for DBA. I often think about a few extra figures so I can morph them into two HYW armies. I also have DBA armies for Early Imperial Rome, Ancient British, Parthian, Norman and Anglo Saxon. I also explore Napoleonic using the DBA derivative DBN, War of the Spinish Succession using DBX and English Civil War using my own adaptation of DBRRR. There is a great deal to explore and dabble in with DBA that does not require vast amounts of figures.

Welcome to the DBA community! I have used Corvus Belli & Essex miniatures to build my Wars of the Roses army. I have found the figure size and styles are such that both manufacturers figures can be on the same base. Indeed I feel this variety enhance the look of the army. This may allow you to build your HYW army buy purchasing a few additional Essex figures to bulk out the HYW figures you already have, if you don’t have enough. The following photo illustrates this in both left hand elements. Other stands may have more of one supplier than another. For example for my WotR army I was keen to have more men at arms in later armour so I selected figures from the Essex range with suitable armour. You will find a few photos of my army on my Ancients & Medieval Blog, link below...

I have stuck to that and now just going back to the projects I dropped.

Thanks Cromwell, I think that is what attracted me to DBA in the first place, numerous armies over time but not requiring a lot of figures. I just need to get out of the gate with my first one and get the rules.

Thanks I emailed them today and hopefully it will be soon or I will find another manufacturer. Once they reply I will let you all know what they say.

Looking at those old figures I'm not sure they are Essex, they seem a lot smaller than the Corvus Belli, but knowing that they can go in the same unit helps me a great deal. I will most likely fill out all the gaps in both armies with Essex. Thanks and I will visit your site too.
