The rule for mounted recoiling is quite straightforward - "A recoiling mounted element can choose either to move 1BW or to move its own base depth if this is less than 1 BW". However Paul Hannah and I have been wondering what tactical/situational advantages others see in choosing either the 1BW recoil or a 30mm recoil (standard mounted BD). May be simple but it eludes us. Advice from others appreciated.

Recoiling 1BW just may take them away from supporting units and/or closer to your own supporting units to encircle your opponent. The difference may just bring my cavalry outside bow range or open a field of fire for own bow.

Might also take you out of the zone of control of an enemy out to your flank and/or keep yourself lined up, properly in a group..

A BD recoil would allow a heavy element to hit you in the flank with a counterattack. Joe Collins

With a mix of chariots and Cv/LH/Kn the BW recoil choice can keep the troops in a group at the end of the recoils, too.

With our eyes finally opened to this Purple nuance, Eric & I found any number of situations in games last night between my renovated Suljuq Turks and Eric's new Cilician Armenians to ponder (agonize!) whether to recoil 30 or 40mm. As you all pointed out above, the reasons were all very situational, in-the-moment decisions. --Yet another small way in which DBA-3 continues to be such an entertaining game.

Thanks all for the useful replies. At our DBA game night on Wednesday we were all "hyper aware" of the recoil choices. In a few situations it did indeed make a difference.
