Considering some of the discussions I have had in the past, I thought I'd get the following clarifications prior to showing up to a tournament wit a fort or BUA.
1. When an artillery element shoots from a BUA or fort it has a CV of 2. Under tactical factors the the rule is - "+4 If garrisoning a city or fort; and either in close combat or shot at."
So then in a distant combat with another missile unit is this applied to the result in the same as manner as with other tactical factors?
2. If the BUA or fort has curved edges how is the range for shooting determined? Is it based in that case on a radial line through the curve? 3 or 5 BW out and 1 BW to either side?
These seem reasonably clear, but just in case -
3. Fast foot defending a BUA or fort not recoiled (thus destroyed) by solid foot on ties?
4. Horde normally ignore most recoil results, however elements sacking or defending a city, fort, or camp are destroyed when scoring less than but more than half on a combat roll, correct?

Thank you for the interesting questions about BUA/Forts/Castles. I greatly appreciate that players make sure they understand the rules for an element type or BUA etc before trying to use them in a tournament (though you should give everything a try at home).
1. Art in a BUA are +2 but when "shot at" get a +4 modifier so become +6 v. shooting (so +6 v. +4 against another Art and +6 v. +2 against Bow - ouch but bear in mind first sentence of "less than that" result PG 11).
2. Curved edges are problamatic, but yes just draw a straight "cord" across the curve and use this as your shooting edge - range is measured from closest point of shooting edge (often one of the end points of the "cord line" in any case). I like "realistic terrian" but be forewarned that odd shaped terrain effects should be worked out with opponent and that a ref is likely to rule strictly against the player who put out the terrain if they seem to have done so seeking gamey advantage.
3. Key sentence is "No effect if attacking or defending a {BUA}" PG 11 under "equal" results. This prempts the "Fast" equals result.
Both my son and I like Castle models and often put one out at home. Always liked the Stronghold concept from HOTT.
