Seconded.
With 16 players it was a good turnout and with some faces I did not recognise it made for a good start. Unfortunately, I didn’t get off to a good start, falling foul of massed knights in wide open spaces in the first two games. When you take an army like Anglo Irish you need some terrain to fall in places that will protect infantry from massed knights and too often during the day my army felt very exposed and suffered badly – 4-0 in one game. At the other extreme I had a huge amount of luck in my last game, with some valiant fast bowmen destroying solid blades who tried to assault their difficult hill slope. We few who were constantly playing on the ‘bottom table’ joked and jibed just like unruly school boys, who find themselves in a similar position at the back of the class. Meanwhile, Claudius was basking in the glow of ‘top table’ good luck, near the teacher’s desk at the front and although it deserted him in the last game he managed to win the tournament by one point over Martin Smith; if their game had ended slightly differently... the stuff of legends! I had more success with other people’s armies than with my own. That might tell me something but I’m not sure what. As Claudius gained yet another victory us ‘no hopers of the bottom table’ didn’t resort to flicking things at other players, or shouting rude things at the teacher, we merely competed for the longest run of ones. Funny how you don’t remember your sixes...
“Enough” I can hear Claudius saying, don’t take me back to the classroom just when it was becoming a distant memory. So, in all seriousness, thanks Pete, great fun as always. And thanks for all the tournaments you have run – we are going to miss you. I hope you have been training up a lieutenant. Prizes for everyone and then off to face the challenges of the drive home.
Congratulations Claudius
Colin

Excellent turnout 16 entrants - slightly down on last year though mostly that was missing Scimitar players. Good range of armies with only the Norse Irish not represented. I was ready to use my Norse Irish but mercifully we had an even number turn up so I could concentrate on my organisational duties which this year included plumbing!
Thanks to everyone for your enthusiasm. its been a blast organising these. Make sure you all pop in to see me once I relocate.
The new scoring system seemed popular: 5 points – Won game 3 points – Drew game but destroyed more element equivalents 2 points – Drew game on equal element equivalents 1 points – Drew game but destroyed fewer element equivalents 0 points – Lost game
Tie break of total enemy element equivalents destroyed.

Thanks for an excellent day's gaming as usual at the Mercian. Will your next tournament be the Northumbrian?
If you manage to get to the Midlands Open in June in Bakewell, you will of course be required to use the Scots Irish army you won last year!
Tara Hinney! (check that in Geordie dictionary!)

Thanks to Pete for organising another excellent day of DBA games, sadly the final one in Coventry. We look forward to similar fun further north.
Thanks also to my fickle friend the dice. A blur of numbers, arithmetic and good luck is all I can currently recall from an orgy of gaming, exhausting!
The Anglo-Irish with Viking allies were highly entertaining and oddly in every one of the six games I played they were the defenders. A waterway, hamlet and two difficult hills provided enough scenery to amuse, or annoy, any invader whether they were Welsh, French or English.
And so we pack up our tents and move on to Newark...

Simon Cheers Simon You are welcome. If all goes well Northumbian would be cool though thanks to 1976 boundary changes the spot we are looking at is technically in Tyne & Wear. Not that I felt it necessary to call the Coventry event "The West Midandlands DBA! " Scots Irish have been to two events. Not sure its very open at Bakewell if I have to rely on 4 Aux backed with Ps!

Thanks for the link, Pete.....nice pics.
I also had trouble loading pics onto Yahoo two days ago. Yahoo took about a dozen, then wouldn’t load the rest. I’ll have to go back to some previous albums and delete content, if that’s an issue (though the Yahoo site is erratic, to say the least....).

Yes the community library is a great resource largely kept going by volunteers.
We get a good deal on the room hire but it is a rare source of additional income for them. The library would be closed and unused on a Sunday otherwise. So everyone is a winner. Apart I suppose from the volunteer librarians who have to act as caretakers to let us in and lock up afterwards but they are still very nice to us...

Thanks to Pete for organising another excellent day of DBA games, sadly the final one in Coventry. Hopefully not the final one in Coventry as I'm sure some of the remaining guys said they would look to continue the event next year. Hope so, as it's always good fun. My army did well with just 1 loss and a losing draw, unfortunately 3 of the wins were when I was playing against them! However it's always good fun to use other people's armies for a change. Mr O'Shea's dice seem to be coming good just in time for the Northern Cup, a champion in waiting perhaps?

Gotta be an improvement on LAST year’s NC, where Mr O’Shea gave a Masterclass in “The Throwing of Ones, and the Occasional Two”, much to the delight of his opponents

If it happens again this year I'll blame it on Mark! (see his comment above). Colin
